News and Nerves

29 Jan

It looks like none of you decided to/had time to blog this week but I have a little down time today so I will anyway.

This week has been very interesting. Being a student again and all. I finally got to go to Andy’s frozen custard on Friday night, thankfully. I needed it after four whole days of school. And I also needed Hurts Donuts on Sunday. By the way, I just realized this is my first five-day school week since about the first week of May. Yikes.

The past few days have had me kind of on-edge about various things. First of all, I had been trying to go back to where I was working last spring, and the manager had seemed like I could come back, no problem. Then he kind of told me that he wasn’t sure I’d get many hours because he’s hiring new people soon to replace everyone who’s leaving in May and they will get priority, so do I still want to come back? That kind of sucked but I said yes. So I went yesterday to fill out the paperwork to start working again. I was kind of nervous about that because I didn’t know if he would be mean or anything (he wasn’t). And he even wrote “15hr/week” on my paper. I’m starting again in a week and a half.

Then I had to go take a drug test. That made me a little nervous because I’m always afraid that a) I’ll make a mistake/do something wrong so it will mess up the results, b) that I’ll have “shy bladder”, or c) that for some reason it will say I’m on drugs when there’s absolutely no way it could be possible. I think it went okay though.

And while I was waiting for that, I got a message from my friend Jacy that our paper about Sandy Hook got accepted for the conference in Minneapolis that we sent it to, and we get to go! The thing that made me nervous about that, though, was that we took Kevin’s name off it even when our professor told us we shouldn’t (she didn’t reply to our email in time). So today I was nervous because we decided to go talk to her and ask what we should do and if she was mad at us for taking it off.

She wasn’t mad and she laughed instead and said she had a feeling we’d done that. But then she told us we have to face The Wrath Of Kevin on our own, which basically meant me because I have two classes with him where I sit right next to him. Shit. And I know that our two professors will probably announce to the class about our paper. Plus there will probably be a press release, a Comm department facebook post, and a story in the campus newspaper which Kevin writes for. So I don’t know, would it be better if I tell him before class one day before he has to hear it for the first time? Now I’m nervous about that. He can get defensive sometimes.

Well, on the bright side, Minneapolis!?

Cathy

UPDATE 7:20pm: I talked to him in the Commons, and I told him that Jacy and I had continued working on the paper and we took his name off… he didn’t even seem upset! He even said “I knew I wouldn’t be able to put any more work into it” so it all worked out 🙂 I think I need a drink now though lols

That Deli Life

10 Oct

Today was my 3rd day overall at HV.  The past two days, I’ve been working in the deli at HV. And being completely honest, I think I like it better at the deli, but I guess I don’t really have too much to go on. There’s just a lot more things to do in the deli. And not everything is “bitch work” because you’re new, which I kind of feel like that’s how it mostly is up front.

Yesterday I was trained, made hummus, made lots of sandwiches, and bagged lots of meats and cheese for customers. Today I did all afore-mentioned, minus the hummus, plus used the meat slicer. That was pretty interesting. My favorite thing to do in the deli though is probably use the sicker machine. You just punch in some numbers for the product, then BAM! It spits out the sticker label then you stick that on the product. Call me lame, don’t care.

Yesterday my cousin who works at HV came to get a sandwich. I don’t think he knew I had started working because he was surprised to see me, and I was kind of surprised to see him. But it was all exciting.

Most of the people I’ve been working with have been pretty cool and chill. I guess there isn’t a manager as of right now in the deli, so everything is pretty laxed. Also today, I accidentally used “suppes tired” in front of my new co-works and was judged hard core. LOL. After that happened, I basically said all of the abbreves I use. Probs, whateves, etc. but it’s cool though because they make fun of me too. Somethings never change. Haha.

Other than working at the deli, my week has been super stressful. I had two tests this week—one in my hardest class, the other in my easiest class. I stayed up really late for the first half of the week studying for the hardest test. Then after that I kind of was just like meh, but I think the second test turned out to be okay, so no worries there.

If I’m being completely honest, it’s been one of those weeks where it just sucks. I wish I could that things were better, but I can’t. Sometimes things happen, and maybe it happened for a reason, but it was a punch to the gut. I wanted it, but I don’t think I realized how much I desperately and whole-heartily wanted it until I was told I couldn’t have it. So now I’m basically back to square one. I just don’t know where I’m headed or what’s ahead. And every time I think about having to think about what I should do next, I just don’t want to think about it. You get me? I hate facing this reality. I hope things get better from here, because it sucks, guys. I guess it’s just one of those obstacles in life, huh?

Peace out, girl scouts.

PS. S/O to Ben Rector and Lorde for getting me this week. Your guy’s music is awesome opossum.
PPS. 42 days to london
PPPS. I posted this with one minute left in Thursday. WHUT UP.

Short Post, Yo.

5 Sep

Alright guys, I’m going to make this short and sweet because I have a lot of other stuff I need to be doing.

Labor Day weekend was pretty much the worst because I basically worked all weekend, which will be nice on my wallet. Me, Kendyl and Derek also went to Santa Cali Gon on Saturday for like 30 minutes because there were way too many people there… and it was also super hot. Unfortunately I did not get my chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwich because apparently their booth moved?!! But we did get to see some clay flowers so that was nice.

This week I turned in my nursing application. That’s 1/3 of the process. Next is the nursing interview, which is next Friday. AHHHHH!!! Yesterday I had a mock nursing interview and it went pretty well. The interviewer said that I did really well, so that gives me a little bit of a confidence boost, but I still need to practice practice practice! Also yesterday I bought tickets to 965’s Halloweenie Roast. I’m super excited to see The Naked and the Famous and The 1975. Derek is coming with and maybe Kendyl…??!! But other than that, nothing that exciting has been happening, except for me studying/doing homework/napping a lot. Next week I have three tests and of course the nursing interview and I will hopefully be orientated at Hy-Vee by then. Hopefully.

Also this week, I finally got a belated birthday card from my cousin in the mail. It was a One Direction card that folds out to be a mini One Direction poster. She’s the greatest.

Peace out, girl scouts.

PS. If Tristan doesn’t start blogging, I’m going to take Wednesdays, because Thursdays are usually a little bit busier for me compared to Wednesdays.

El fin! Hasta enero, Springfield. Hasta pronto, amigos :-)

15 May

I am free! 🙂

This is a little bittersweet though. It’s been the best semester of college by far, potentially the best of my life ever. It was much needed after the worst semester of college and my life ever last semester. But this one has been awesome. I am a little sad it’s over and that I won’t see a lot of my friends and professors or be on Drury’s campus until January. But then I remember I’m going to LONDON in 3 months so I stop being sad pretty quick.

I actually haven’t been that stressed out this week. I’ve been stressed all semester, in a good way though. It kept me busy and kept me going all the time, but I just feel so satisfied when I check things off my list of things to do, so I’ve been managing my time really well. Considering how much I’ve been working, I’ve had to. So I never got panicked-stressed out.

Friday night we had our final Summit project presentations. Here’s me and my roommates outside our house wearing our Volunteer shirts we got from the shelter.

Today I had my final presentation of my research project. I still can’t believe that dang project that wouldn’t go away is… gone. If anyone’s interested in learning about Media Framing of the Sandy Hook Shooting and wants to read a 17-page paper about it, hit me up. My mom told me she thought it would be really boring but it kept her attention. So there’s a testimonial, if you’re skeptical.

I got my final grades for my two Spanish classes where I have an awesome teacher. 97.75% in Spanish 302 and 97.6% in Senior Seminar! I got a 98% on both of my final papers. The other day I was talking to my professor and she said I’ve really improved a lot and I am probably one of the ones who have improved the most.

Here’s a picture of me and my class at her house after the Iniciación ceremony for the Sigma Delta Pi honor society! Those little kids are another professor’s kids.

enyay

I’m really going to miss my Spanish class!

I don’t know what to do with myself now. Probably eat a lot of food, right? I’ve been having a lot of Chipotle and pizza lately.

Or maybe I should work on cleaning this:

room51513.

… Nah. I’m going to enjoy my freedom for now.

Here’s a list of some of the best things about this semester (no particular order):

  • Going to Atlanta to watch the basketball team win the national championship
  • Getting the outstanding sophomore in the communication department award
  • Eating dinner at my Spanish professor’s house with my class
  • Winning extra credit for our research poster
  • A cat named Georgie at the animal shelter
  • IPHONE
  • Getting prepared to go to London
  • Making new friends with people in my classes
  • Being addicted to the Jodi Arias trial (Guilty- first degree premeditated murder)
  • Going to St. Louis for a weekend with Caitlin
  • Not having any classes I hate
  • Not having calculus which is the ultimate class I hate

I’ll be home on Friday night, see you guys for Dirty Dancing on Saturday night! I’ll make some snakes. Oops I meant to say snacks, but it’s funny that I said snakes instead so I decided not to change it.

And t-minus six days until the Of Monsters and Men concert! That kind of snuck up on us, didn’t it? Hooray!

Cathy

P.S. Let’s come watch Andy Roddick play on the Springfield Lasers tennis team sometime this summer! I don’t really know anything about him but I know you guys do.

P.P.S. I’m still in shock it’s summer now. IT’S SUMMER RIGHT NOW. It feels like it was just last summer, right? I’m so excited for pie-worthy stories and sitting on the big rock at Bass Pro and being scared of creepy people and raccoons. Can we go camping on your property again, Kendyl? I wonder if Nick will be allowed this year.

P.P.P.S. How is it that we graduated from Chrisman 2 years ago? How is it that we just finished our SOPHOMORE YEAR OF COLLEGE?

London Calling

30 Jan

Hey guys!

I’m having a pretty good start to the semester, and by that I mean that I don’t totally hate any of my classes, which I think is a first. Granted, it’s still only my second week, but I’m pretty sure that in semesters past I could at least tell which class I hated by this point.

Mostly since I’ve been back, I’ve been working a lot! I kind of have to pay back my parents about $1,200 and I don’t really want to be indebted to them for my whole life. I picked up 3 shifts this weekend, so I’m really looking forward to payday. But you know what I’m trying not to do? Spend money using my debit card. For this reason I have no food in the house. I guess I’d rather starve than spend money. Because you know what I need to save for?!?!

londonThat’s right. In 210 short days (probably long days) (also known as August 28) I will be arriving in London!!! We had our first orientation meeting yesterday morning and got all the official paperwork that suddenly makes it seem like it’s really going to happen, instead of how it felt when I first signed up about a year and a half ago (like it was forever away). There are 5 girls and 1 boy signed up to go, and I only kind of know one girl, so we are going to room together. The dorms are triple though, so I guess we’ll get put with a random, which will be cool! Oh, and they told us that Regent’s College is super okay with people coming to visit and staying in your dorm for a week with no extra cost! Sooo I wanted to say that you’re all cordially invited to come visit me in London at any point during the fall semester 🙂

Now I just have to register for classes before next Tuesday, which is proving tricky, and I was kind of freaking out a little when I was looking at my four-year-plan. But the good news is that it looks like I will still be graduating in time 😉

Talk to you later, mates!

Cathy

What is this shit?

31 Oct

This past week has been really busy for me, I’ve only had 2 days off from work since last Sunday. Thursday night, I worked at the front desk and work was so boring and there was so little to do that I almost fell asleep in my chair.

Caitlin went home this weekend for the J-Biebs concert, so I didn’t think I’d be doing too much because we usually hang out all weekend. Friday night, one of the girls from Authentic and a few other girls asked if I wanted to go see “Perks of Being a Wallflower” with them and I was excited they invited me! So we stopped at Walmart to get candy and snacks first, then went to see it. Me and another girl from KC got really excited at the beginning because the movie theater company has a really funny introduction and we were looking forward to it.

“Wehrenberg” “Wehrenberg “Wehrenberg…”

The movie was good, and it got over around midnight. On the way back to school, we got stopped at… a sobriety checkpoint! I was super excited and I think it was all of our first times going through one. The police officer shined his light at all of us and got Erica’s license since she was driving and asked where we were coming from, and we said the movies, and he asked what we saw. He told us the last thing he was Magic Mike. Anyway it was pretty painless.

Saturday I worked at the front desk again and it was the best day so far. In the staff room there were Halloween cookies and candy bags for us. There was a baby shower in the community room and a lady asked us if we wanted cupcakes. We watched tv and listened to Taylor Swift’s new album. I got some homework done. One girl I was working with was painting her nails like that’s a totally normal thing to do as a front desk receptionist, but since she’s worked there for like 6 years I would trust her. Later she made us pizza pockets for dinner. If that’s the kind of stuff I get paid to do, I am more than happy.

When I got home Saturday night, Kayla, Tobi, and Deidre were getting ready to go to the quad for Halloween and I assisted with their costumes. The quad is where all the fraternity houses are/where the parties all are. I didn’t go to the quad last year but I kind of wanted to this year but I hadn’t made any plans. I texted Candace and asked if she was going, and she said their group was going in like an hour and a half, so I was like crap, I need to dress up! As you can see from my updated “about me” picture, I dressed as my old standby of hipster.

The quad was weird. It was all blocked off with orange plastic fencing so the only way in was through the Lambda Chi Alpha house. Police officers waited at the entrance and checked our Drury ID’s because they didn’t want anyone from Missouri State to get in. Also they wrote huge “M’s” for MINOR on our hands with a big fat black marker.  We danced in all the houses, watched a lot of people stumble down hallways and pass out in doorways, and my personal highlight was when a girl from that I haven’t seen in a while grabbed my hand, slurred “Do you remember me?” and then kissed me on the cheek. Also when two girls came around with pumpkin buckets and offered “Candy or Condoms?”

Worked again Sunday, got free pizza from a birthday party. Seriously, this is my kind of job.

Yesterday I woke up with a cold though. And last night, I slept for a grand total of… zero minutes! That’s right, I did not sleep a single second last night. My heart rate is really high and it felt like my body was/is  basically in panic mode. My whole body is sore from the cold and I CAN’T SLEEP! I emailed my professors around 4:00am because by then I basically decided I wasn’t going to class. Also I had to email the volunteer coordinator at the animal shelter, and I was scheduled to work today so I had to call in. Around 5:30am I called my parents and they told me to go to Walgreens when it opened (stupid, they aren’t 24 hours like at home) so I went at 7:00am and got some Benadryl to make me drowsy.

When I came back to the apartment I still couldn’t sleep, so I went to the nurse that opened at 8:30. She gave me some stuff for a cold, and told me to take another Benadryl. She told me to come back if my heart rate didn’t go down.

I just went back to the nurse. I can sleep for about 15 minutes at a time, even though it’s very shallow sleep and I wake up very suddenly. What is this shit??? It reminds me of when I had to go to the ER in the middle of the night on Christmas during senior year because I was dehydrated. They gave me an IV and I got knocked out to sleep, and it was awesome. I got a doctor’s appointment for 2:00, but I wish they would just give me an IV too, but I doubt that will happen. I hope I can get some sleep soon :-/

Cathy

P.S. I totally forgot it’s Halloween. Guess I am not in the “spirit”… haha get it, spirit

Snowballs WTF.

10 Apr

Saturday I was standing at work, not doing much because it was drizzly outside and people are pansies and don’t want to rent boats when its drizzly. So I was standing at the cash register admiring the food that I don’t want to buy because I make minimum wage and I’m cheap and I found myself staring at the snowballs. I don’t know what your guys’ opinion on these particular little Debbie treat, but personally I think they are terrible. They have coconut on them (coconut is the devil), which is absolutely revolting, but they make them look so pretty. So, I was just standing there wishing that snowballs tasted as good as they looked.

Saturday after work I went shopping and spent more money than I made, but oh well I needed some more clothes. I got a nice floppy summer hat and a new bathing suite so I am ready for summer! Except I still need to buy a beach cruiser!!!

I was watching Survivor Man with Les Stroud (I don’t know how to spell his name) and decided that we are all going camping this summer (except less intense because I am not about to eat crap like grubs and tree bark).  Or maybe we should eat tree bark #YOLO

The summer after I graduate, I am already planning on going to China, but I also really want to go backpacking somewhere. Maybe Europe or the Appalachian Trail, but it is going to happen. Also I’ve been thinking, I know its three years away and all but I don’t want a real job. I don’t want to be tied down, so I’m planning on staying in school forever (ok that’s an over exaggeration, but I’m at least going for a couple more years)… Maybe I’ll join the Navy… you are guaranteed to be on a Coast right?

Easter was great. I had lots of meat, and I am a big fan of meat let me tell you. I was the first in line for food as always and I gorged myself with ribs, chicken legs, ham, potatoes, and rolls (yes I had to tell you everything I ate).  We hid the Easter eggs for Max and Sam and we hid them extra hard because its fun to watch them wander around with looks of cluelessness.

A month and one day left for me and then I’m free… kind of. I hope these last few weeks of school don’t kill me and that I pass anatomy.

-Kendyl

P.S. Today is Tom’s day without shoes, but I’m a fan of shoes so I have a dilemma.

P.P.S. You guys should look at the views by country, we’re kind of big in Malaysia. The Malaysians love us.
