I just want free ice cream

17 Apr

Hey, it’s Wednesday. I kept thinking/hoping yesterday was Wednesday. I guess that’s what happens when last week we only had four days of class.

I realized this was the first weekend I’ve been in Springfield since the beginning of March. I volunteered early on Saturday, from 8:00-10:00, so I celebrated having the whole day ahead of me by taking a nap for two hours. Then I got to work on an assignment which was basically a visual representation of a resume, created to look like an advertisement. That was for my Principles of Advertising and Public Relations class.

I had a plan and I went to the Mac Lab to try and use Photoshop. I’ve used Photoshop before but not in a while. After it took me one hour to draw a single square onscreen, I called it quits.  Also, using Mac computers seriously make me feel like Helen Keller.

This week is our “Spring Fling” week so I just got a cute free t-shirt. Tonight they are sponsoring an event at Andy’s Frozen Custard – free ice cream to the first 400 Drury students. So I probably can’t pass that up.

Tomorrow is “Theme Day” which is the culmination of our convocation series for the year. This year’s was called “Voices Unbound” which means that every Thursday we had a speaker come to campus and present, and these guests had to do with journalism or communication through media. Some of the guests included: Andy Carvin, senior strategist at NPR; Brian Stelter, New York Times journalist; and Ondi Timoner, a film producer whose work has won Sundance Film Festival awards.

My media writing professor is the one who organized it this year and tomorrow we are having a woman named Roxana Saberi come talk. She is an American journalist who got arrested in Iran a few years ago. Anyway, my professor invited me and two other students from his classes to a lunch with her! I didn’t know anything about it but I was happy that he asked me.

I don’t have any classes tomorrow because usually I have two Spanish classes but my professor is going out of town for a conference. Friday my two afternoon classes are canceled but I don’t remember why. I am going to St. Louis with Caitlin for the weekend so I can see her house so that will be fun.

That’s all!

ONLY A FEW MORE WEEKS.

the end

10 May

Hello all!

I write this from the comfort of my own couch while watching House Hunters International on TV. I woke up at 11:30 and it’s a great feeling indeed.

My last week was pretty good, I’d say. I don’t remember much about the weekend. Monday I picked up my final photo assignment and I found out I got a 91% in the class… WTF! I was pissed because I got an A on every assignment and didn’t understand how that equated to me getting an A- in the class… That was until I re-read the syllabus and apparently you lose 15 points every time you don’t come to class (Stupid, I always got my assignments done early, so why would I come to class another 3 times for 3 hours each when I had nothing to work on?!) but anyway after I realized that I had in fact “earned it”, I wasn’t mad anymore.

I got a 97% in Multimedia (video) class. I had a final paper due for Alpha Seminar about my first year of college. We turned it in on Tuesday and our final consisted of eating pizza and having to dance out the door when we left. I’ll paste the last paragraph of my paper here because I believe it’s relevant to my “first year of college is over” post.
“With that, I am feeling a lot more confident about my next year, assuming it really does arrive in mid-August as I finally suspect that it will. I’ve learned a lot this year – a moderate amount of academic skills, and an extreme amount of oh-shit-I’m-almost-an-adult skills. All in all, I have immensely enjoyed my first year of college and it was less agonizing than expected.”

Monday I didn’t have any finals so Caitlin and I went to this cute little crepe restaurant downtown for breakfast. I had a strawberry, banana, and Nutella crepe. Yum. I began packing, but I took pictures of my room first so I would always be able to remember how it was my freshman year. I’ll post them because I know Morgan is the only one who really saw it!

Tuesday I had my Spanish final which I didn’t study much for because I had an “I don’t care” attitude. YAY!

Wednesday, after 5 hours in the library on Tuesday night (which I mostly didn’t study but instead read “Full House Reviewed,”
(which I highly recommend if you are at all familiar with the show and want to laugh)) I had my computer science final. I think I did decently.

My mom came yesterday at 2:15 and I had to check out at 4:30. We took things to the car, and then walked over to a friend’s Summit apartment so I could show my mom the set up of where I’ll be living next year. Then we went to the on campus fast food place, and we got something to eat. Too bad I still had $115 Panther Bucks left… oops!

In all, I was feeling pretty sad to leave and it was such a weird feeling! I’ll miss living in Wallace Hall… at least until I think about the boys on the floor above me who apparently decided it was time to drag their furniture around the room every night at 2:00am…

My first and last days in Wallace Hall

Today I looked online and saw that I earned a B+ in Spanish but my teacher bumped my grade to an A-! I posted a twitter status about it saying “A- in Spanish, heck yeah!” until I saw that another girl in my Spanish class had posted “B in Spanish, so happy!” 27 minutes before me, so I thought that was in bad taste and deleted mine. At 3 today I went to UpDog and filled out my tax forms… I start Monday! Can’t wait 🙂

I hope to see you guys soon!

the honey badger is my idol this week

7 Mar

Hello all. This week has been most uneventful. But you know me, usually I can come up with some random shit to talk about.

I skipped my photography class on Thursday morning and ohh it was glorious. I spent the evening studying for a computer science test that I would allegedly have on Friday, however this event never occurred.

Friday morning I woke up around 6am feeling like my head was going to split open. I was also sweating to death and felt extremely like I was going to throw up, but I didn’t. It was a migraine, which I’ve never really had before. I stumbled out of bed and sat down at my computer, covering my face with my hands because it hurt my head to look at the bright screen. I kind of typed some words to my professors which I read later and were not so legible. Anyway, I went back to bed until around 11 and felt better and went up to Caitlin’s room to hang out. But around 3 I started having some trouble seeing, like when I would look at a word I could only see one letter. When I looked at Caitlin and Alexis, I could only see one part of them that I was focusing on, like one eye. It was frightening. Then I kind of lost my peripheral vision and saw a lot of zigzags on the stuff that I was looking at. My mom wanted me to go to the ER but I said nahhh bro honey badger don’t care.

Saturday I slept late and was feeling better, and in the evening I went to this dance party at someone’s church where we needed costumes. With only about an hour’s notice, I dressed up as a hipster and I think I made a pretty good one. My hair was already dirty so that helped.

Sunday I once again didn’t do anything really. I folded laundry and skyped and that was it.

Monday I woke up and was feeling pretty good, and my computer science teacher sympathized with me because he said he’s had a migraine before and that I could just take the test Wednesday (today). But during my last class of the day at 11 I started having problems seeing again. It was a little different though – you know when you look at the sun and it kind of burns a big spot into your eye for a while? It was like that when I looked at my professor, only I hadn’t been recently looking at the sun. It didn’t last as long as Friday, but then my headache came back and it was angry. I was supposed to go get help with a computer science project that was due today but instead I went to sleep for about 3 hours. I felt better when I got up though.

Yesterday I had photography at 8, which all we did was a critique and I don’t know how this teacher managed to drag out a critique of 10 people’s photos for an hour and a half. At 9:30 I went back to bed until 11 when I met Caitlin for lunch. Then at 11:30 I went to computer science lab, and my teacher kept asking me how I was feeling and stuff like that, he’s really nice. I’m sad I won’t be taking computer science any more after this year because he is a great person and I like him a lot. I’m just not sure how much long I can stand dismally failing.

Then I had my video class, where I swear it was 80 degrees in there and it was like 70 outside. Not cool. (Literally.) We watched each other’s videos from the last project and we were all comatose to say the least. But mine actually made people laugh, it was another HIPSTER vid so I’ll post that on FB when I can figure out how to get my hard drive to work. My teacher enjoyed it too I think.

Moritz and I have been making webcam videos for each other since we still haven’t been able to talk quite as much, so it’s really cute and I like that a lot! Less than 3 weeks until he’s done, so that’s great, but unfortunately the colleges he’s applying to STILL haven’t received his paperwork 😦 I’m kind of getting into apathetic mode to be quite honest, which I know is bad but I can’t help it. Honey badger don’t care. Sorry I’m overusing that phrase today guys, but I just remembered him and I really like it so I just need to use it as much as possible.

Morgan and Kelsey are coming to visit me Saturday, YAY! I’m ready to eat until our sides split. WOOO HOO!

Next week is going to be hell with an 8 page paper due, a Spanish test, a Spanish oral presentation, a photography assignment, and a video all due. FML. I hope I’m still alive at this point next week, guess we’ll find out.

5 Days

Weekly update time!

Now normally, I would type up a day-by-day recall of my week: but this week has been most uneventful. Seriously. I didn’t go to many classes because I have not been feeling well and could not get good sleep when my eyes finally would close. I think this was caused by my stressed out Sunday.. I spent most of my Sunday worrying about sharing my story/testimony with my Bible study group and then it didn’t go as well as I had hoped so I was bummed then just became restless I suppose.

The stuff that actually was cool I will tell you about here > So Friday I went to see a musical put on by my school called Ragtime. It was a great production, and now more than ever I want to play Glinda the Good Witch in Wicked on Broadway. Saturday I missed brunch (this is very sad because they had bacon) but I did go to the senior night for our girl’s basketball team. We won and now the girls are in second seed in the Big Sky conference post-season tournament. Wish our boys were better. Saturday night, Kendal and I went to church and heard a great message about Rest in God, kind of just what I needed to hear. Then Sunday= Game Day! I have been a little nervous about the abilities of our team, but we started the season with a win! Well, really the other team didn’t show up until I had already signed the paper saying they forfeited and we won… but we scrimmaged them anyways and I’m pretty sure we either won or tied. They seemed pretty put together too… and their goalie was wearing awesome sunglasses the whole time which just made everything better. And now Megan, Holly, Tori, and I are going to Fort Collins for a pizza dinner at Beau Jo’s.

Looking forward too: Spring Break! Starts on Friday!! Also, I’m road tripping with Kelsey to Springfield to see Cathy! We are going to Lambert’s and I am pumped. Ooh ooh I’m starting my Ropes Course class on Monday! So exciting and nerve- wrecking at the same time. Can’t wait to be home though.

Random schmamdom: I made a bookmark out of pressed flowers from Valentines Day and I think it’s pretty neat. Also, March Madness starts so soon that I can hardly stand it another minute! March is the best only because it is filled with the sounds of whistles blowing, buzzers screaming, basketballs being dunked, screaming fans, crying fans, and upsets that will either make or break your ENTIRE bracket. (Like last year when Kansas lost in like round two and I had them winning it all in one bracket- never again my friends, never again!) I am super ultra sore again. This time it’s from kickboxing class.

Yo. Yo. Yo. I should be working on a computer science program but this is better than doing that.

I’ve been having this problem with my eye where it’s been hurting for about a week. Friday I went to the nurse and I got an appointment at one of Springvegas’s many hospitals, fo freeee. Apparently all of us pay a health fee every year so we get free doctor’s visits. But they didn’t do anything except tell me to buy these $15 eye drops at Walgreens and to come back on Monday if it wasn’t better. It wasn’t better, but it snowed and I didn’t feel like going out so I had my mom make me an appointment for this weekend at home with an ophthalmologist. At Walgreens I also bought a bag of miniature Reese’s cups and ate the whole bag while catching up on my television shows, because Caitlin was gone for the weekend and I was bored.

Friday I also had an interview at Hallmark, I thought it went really well but I didn’t get the job. Guess I will just continue to be broke af.

Well obviously it snowed on Monday. One of my teachers cancelled class cause she’s badass and was like “Let’s call it a snowday” even though it wasn’t that bad. I have a portrait assignment due in a couple weeks for photography so I took some pictures of Caitlin in the snow. The fitness center closed early so I was able to watch a full episode of the Bachelor. (I still hate Courtney.) Then I spent the night in Caitlin’s room because Alexis was somewhere else and she said I could sleep in her bed, and Caitlin and I both had 8am class so we figured it would work. It felt weird hauling my duffel bag upstairs to have a sleepover in a different room of the same building.

Yesterday was Valentine’s Day. My classes were pretty boring; in photography we just did a critique of the last project and in Video we just watched our last project. BUT AT LUNCH IT WAS VALENTINE’S BUFFET AND THERE WAS A FREAKING CHOCOLATE FOUNTAIN. And red velvet cake balls and white cake balls and pineapple and strawberry and pretzels and cookies and all kinds of deliciousness. I LOVE SCHOOL. Also that wasn’t even the dessert bar, which is always awesome, but yesterday it was even more so. Last night Kayla and I had our date, and Caitlin ended up coming along too because her dance practice got canceled. We had reservations at one of the nicer restaurants in town called Kai which is a sushi place. Kayla ordered one that was on fire. It was really nice, I felt like that restaurant belonged somewhere like Los Angeles instead of Springfield, Missouri. We got really full but then we went to The Cup because Kayla said she had never been before and I said I hadn’t been in a whole week and was obviously due back for another visit. We went back to school for a while and I got a package from my mom that included a lot of chocolate. Then we saw The Vow at 9:50 at one of the theaters. It was okay but I did not cry at all like I was expecting to! And I HATED the ending!!!

Me and Caitlin at Kai

Caitlin, Kayla, one of Kayla’s friends, and I are applying to live in one of the on-campus apartments next year. There are 5 apartments that are really nice, and two groups of four live in each. (One on the upper floor, one on the lower.) These apartments include a kitchen with a stove, oven, full-length fridge, microwave, and dishwasher(!!!!!), four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a washer and dryer (!!!!!) and a living room, and a cute little bar area. I WANT IT SO BAD! The thing is, you have to have a full-year service project in order to live there, and preference is given to sophomores. We have to fill out this lengthy application and turn it in, and then we will find out if we need to come back and present it to a panel. We’ll find out by next Friday if we got it. Today Caitlin and I went to go meet with the volunteer coordinator and when we tried to drive there, my car wouldn’t start. We took hers instead and when we got back I called Security to try and help me start it, but they said it wasn’t working and must be some other problem. So I just called my dad and I don’t know what we’ll do now because I was supposed to go home this weekend.

The only other interesting thing was Spanish class today. My teacher was talking about the verb “coger” (ko-hair, not kogurr) which means “to grab” or “to catch” or pretty much anything that involves the action of taking, or something innocent like that, but thanks to Ms. Diecidue in Spanish III, I also happened to know that it doubles for meaning the verb of the F-word. Apparently that is a cultural thing in Spain, but not in South America. So today Dr. Chamorro told my class full of unsuspecting students – “It means ‘to fahk’.” (He is Argentinan.) So then we all laughed because I’ve only heard one other teacher say the F-word before but she didn’t say it like an Argentinan because she’s American. But then he said, “This is only in Spain! Imagine if people from Australia came to America and they were using fahk for every word because it doesn’t mean the same to them? ‘I will fahk the pencil. Fahk the trashcan. I want you to fahk my backpack.’ That’s what it’s like when people from South America go to Spain.” Totes awks.

Okay guys, go out and fahk the day.

Cathy

P.S. Jackie Robinson is trending so I’ll use him as my pop culture reference of the day because he has an awesome last name.
