Year In Review

16 May

As of yesterday, my semester/year has finally ended, and to be honest it’s kind of bittersweet. Coming to Mizzou was never really a plan that I had planned on following through with. Though it’s been an adventure adjusting to this new environment, I feel like I made the right choice, and I hope that I’ll be able finish my education here (fingers crossed for nursing school!). That isn’t to say that I regret my year at Jewell, because I don’t. But I guess if there’s one thing I regret it’s not making the decision to come to Mizzou first, if that makes sense… Haha.

This Spring semester has most definitely, hands down, been the most challenging/stressful semester I have ever gone through. This week especially. I hate finals. It probably could almost classify as a miracle that I’ve even made it out alive. But still, for the most part I’ve enjoyed every class that I was in.

Here are some highlights/lessons learned/favorite memories of my year at Mizzou (in no particular order or importance).

  • Getting my first speeding ticket, also getting my first parking ticket (the latter was yesterday, when I almost missed my last final.)
  • Seeing Imagine Dragons preform… FOR FREE. And seeing Passion Pit and Matt & Kim for a small fee.
  • Being sick for 6 weeks. Not cool man. I’m better now though.
  • Microbiology 2800. I don’t care who you are/what your major is, you need to take this class to know the hilarity/awesomeness that is Dr. Furrer. Besides that, subject matter/teaching wise, it’s probably the best class I have ever taken. Ever.
  • Getting 2.5 snow days.
  • I can procrastinate like no body’s business. Thank you Netflix, FB, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest and Imgur. That being said, apparently my body can’t handle stress that is usually a result of procrastination very well (see point #3).
  • The closest I got to an all-nighter was sleeping only for 2 hours…. On many, many, many nights.
  • Ellis library is freaking awesome. Although scary as well (I’m sure librarian Kendyl could tell you more so than I can)
  • Getting a lot of free things, including shirts and lots of food.
  • Attractive male in my history class.  He was real attractive.
  • I miss music/violin more than I thought I would, probably one downside to coming to MU.
  • I’ve been able to appreciate my family and KC a lot more now that I’m 123 miles/1.5 hours away.
  • The basement of the Student Union has very comfy couches that are GREAT for naps.
  • I probably spent too much in the bookstore on clothing/apparel and books. Gosh I really hate buying books.
  • Never take a “5 minute nap” during a study break. It never ends up being 5 minutes, no matter how hard you try to make it last only 5 minutes.

I can’t believe that I’ve just finished my 2nd year of college. CRAZY!! However I’m getting super excited for summer! Even though I’m going to be so majorly busy, wahhhh!!

Peace out for now!
Megan

PS. Sorry Cathy for kind of copying the premise of your post!!

PPS. I just got a little depressed, guys. I googled Kansas City Explorers to find out their schedule this summer. I found out that they’re moving to Irving TX because there wasn’t enough corporate support in KC to keep there here. 😦

Spring fever(s)

9 May

The reason why I didn’t blog last week was because I was still feeling like crap and was having recurrent fevers. All I basically did was go to class then sleep. When I got home Friday afternoon, it got really bad and I slept until my mom came back from work, which was about 9. I woke up radiating heat for pretty everywhere on my body. When I took my temp and saw that it was 104, I immediately had a crying break down because 1) I thought I was going to die, 2) I was/am tired of being sick FOR OVER A MONTH, probably more like 6 weeks-ish, 3) I was feeling really helpless 4) I had been on at least 2 antibiotics in the past month and was still “sick” 5) I just wanted to know what was going on. My mom makes a quick phone call to my Asian doctor and he says I should probably go to the ER. I’ve seen/talked to that man way too many times this month.

Anyway, so guess where I spent my Friday night/early Saturday morning at? Centerpoint ER. The nurse was a pretty funny bro and the doctor… well let’s just say he was pretty attractive. Anyway, I was pretty dehydrated so they ran an IV and I got some fluids. They also ran some tests but all of my results came back pretty much clean. But they said there’s a chance it could be autoimmune since my SED rate was kind of elevated.

I feel like I could be a patient on an episode of House. The title could be, “Girl with the Fevers” or something. Just kidding. But really, still don’t know what’s wrong with me. My fevers haven’t been as recurrent this week. And I’ll probably have to do some more testing this summer to see if there is actually some underlying cause.

Also today is the last day of classes. I’m starting to get really nervous about finals week because all my finals are pretty much back to back. Oh and two my finals start at 7:30……am!!! WHAT KIND OF CRAP IS THAT?! But I just have to remember that after Thursday I’ll be freeeeeee!!! Can’t wait for summer!

Also Gatsby comes out tomorrow. SUPER EXCITED ABOUT THAT.

Megan

PS. Here’s this. Watch the whole thing. It’s worth your time.

More Sickness and Other Fun Stuff

25 Apr

Sorry for not blogging last week. I feel like a slacker. Not really. But you didn’t really miss much from my life as I was sick again with a pretty high fever and everything else that comes with being sick. I skipped class Tuesday and went home to see my regular doctor (Fun fact, he’s Chinese). My step-mom suggested it since I was already established there and if I went to a doctor here I’d have to go to a completely new place, start new paper work, blah blah blah, etc. It was just easier this way. Anyway they think it was a sinus infection so they gave me some antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. I stayed at home that night, skipped my 9am lab the next morning, and got back in time for my 12 o’clock history class. I’m feeling loads better now anyhow.

On Saturday I went to the Itzhak Perlman concert at the Kauffman Center. Yep. I saw probably one of the most famous violinists

Mr. Perlman  leaving the stage with accompanist and a standing-o from the audience.

preform. Nothing is really like a live performance, and that goes for any concert really. But this in particular was nothing short incredible. He’s a musical genius and makes a difficult talent look so easy. I’m so incredibly jealous of his abilities and seeing him preform definitely made me miss violin/being in symphony even more than I already have been missing it. I’m so glad I decided to buy a ticket to see him, even if I did go alone. Since it was Jewell sponsored event, I did see a lot of Jewell people, including a few of my old sorority sisters and even my high school orchestra director. Those moments were a little bit querd but it was nice to catch-up for a few moments.

While driving to the venue, I was about to turn onto the street of the Kauffman and noticied that a pretty decent sized group of the WBC were picketing. It was after thinking about it that I realized they were picketing the concert. I am a Christian but these people are wayyyyyyy off the mark on many things. I mean aren’t we all called to love no matter what? Isn’t the only person who can judge is God Himself? I mean IT’S JUST A CONCERT FOR GOODNESS SAKE. Really guys, stop your ridiculousness and go home.

At any rate, the days left in the semester keep dwindling and honestly I’m not exactly sure how I feel about it. I sooooooooo badly want it to be summer already, where I won’t have to worry about school and can actually get a decent night’s rest. But that being said, I also don’t want to be thinking about the millions of things I still have to do and the million and 50 things I have to study before the end of the semester. The end of the semester has crept up on me and I’m so not ready for it. Pray I don’t get sick again, that’s the last thing I need!

Better get back to studying! I have a test later today…..
Peace out!
Megan

PS. I wish I knew why I found this so hilarious. Maybe you’ll find it hilarious too.

Spring Breaking

28 Mar

This break started out pretty good. Once I came back, Emily and I went out to get Les Mis on DVD. It was a monumental moment (as I am sure you guys have gathered). I’d been saving gift cards so I could splurge on the most expensive version with all the bonus items… I got the edition with the collectible cards. You guys really shouldn’t be surprised. LOL. I’m not going to lie, I’ve probably watched that movie at least 15 times already.

Saturday I woke up with a sore throat. Not bueno. So I’ve been sick all week. My immune system has not been on its game this year. Anyway I ended up having a low grade fever for a couple days that was off and on. But I slept a lot. So that part was nice. I’m glad I didn’t have class this week because that would have sucked to have to worry about missing class and being sick.

Other things I did on Saturday:
-ate Dim Sum with my family
-went to the Asian market
-ate at Golden Corral for their all you can eat Prime Rib with my family
-watched it snowwwww! (ps. I’m getting tired of the snow now)
-had a Birthday Cake shake from HiBoy
-Hung out with you lovelies (except for that kid we never hear from anymore) and played spoons. LOL. Good times guys.

This is probably a bad thing, but I haven’t done anything academic until today. Meh. Oh well. I’ll get it done eventually.

Tomorrow Kendyl and I are road-tripping to St. Louis to visit an old WJC friend for the day. I’m actually really excited about it since we haven’t seen her in a while. Plus I haven’t visited St. Louis in a while either since I was like 10 (unless you count those few hours we waited in the Amtrak station going to and from Chicago).

After tomorrow, break will pretty much be over. That’s depressing. But then only 2 months until summer! Yay!

I think that’s it for this week.
Peace Out!

Sickness and Other Random Thoughts

31 Jan

Yep. I’m sick, guys. Stay away. I’m incubating viruses and bacteria in my room. Just kidding, it’s not that bad. Just a cold. But the bad thing is that since I’m taking microbiology, I’m learning about all the bacteria that’s causing my sickness. It’s quite lovely. Just kidding. It’s not. It’s turning me into a germaphobe, but not in an OCD kind of way. LOL.

Can I just talk for a second about how expensive textbooks are?! Like really, am I not paying enough money to take a class, but you still want me to pay hundreds of dollars for books?!! ARE YOU FOR REAL?

Anyway, this weekend I’m going home because I forgot a lot of things when I came back from break. That can probably be attributed to packing two hours before I left.  And also because I have to get some tax things sorted out. Oh and because I will have a week-ish of employment next next week (hopefully) at the candy store downton. Yeah a week is not that much, but at this point, I’m just kind of desperate for money.

This week has been pretty productive-less. And the homework/readings have just kept piling up. My mind/body still hasn’t realized that it’s time to hit the “school mode.” I have a 300-ish page book I have to read by Monday for a quiz. I’ve only read the first chapter. I never thought I’d say this, but the 6 week Christmas Break was probably a bad idea. Instead I’ve just watched a lot of Netflix, and spent too much time on YouTube, FB, Twitter, Pinterest and various other websites that contribute to my procrastination.

Okay, that’s all for now. Have to get back to my homework that I’ve procrastinated until last minute. Weeeeeeee.

Never get sick.

7 Nov

Never get sick. Trust me. It sucks.

I went to the doctor last Wednesday and I had a fever. They drew some blood and tested me for strep and the flu. I had pretty much every symptom of the flu other than vomiting but I think that’s because I hadn’t eaten anything. The doctor said that if it wasn’t the flu, then they would recommend me to stay in the hospital overnight for observation. What?? After not sleeping for about 36 hours I went back to my apartment and finally fell asleep for a while. When I woke up I talked to my mom and she said she would come to Springfield on Thursday and take care of me.

Luckily we have an extra mattress in our apartment so my mom was able to sleep on the floor in my room instead of getting a hotel. This is a little graphic but here it goes: When I woke up on Friday I couldn’t open my eyes because they were crusted together, I think it was a side effect to some medication. I went back to the doctors and got some chest x-rays, and then my mom convinced me to just come home for the weekend.

But that meant I had to call in to work for Saturday and Sunday, when I had already called in two other days that week. The manager wasn’t too happy and I think he wanted to fire me, but he asked me to bring in a doctor’s note so I did. Thankfully I still have my job right now.

I slept a lot this weekend.

The week’s been decent except for the fact that I most likely failed my calculus test yesterday. I voted yesterday, but unfortunately the polling place was out of “I Voted Today” stickers which kinda pissed me off. Also I was quite unprepared for the method of voting. It really threw me for a loop.

seriously, what is this?

No hanging chads here. I only voted on 5 issues, also I voted for all the people who weren’t running against anyone just so I could feel like I was being a good citizen and voting for more than 5 issues.

Unfortunately I didn’t wear a patriotic outfit. That must be why they ran out of stickers.

What is this shit?

31 Oct

This past week has been really busy for me, I’ve only had 2 days off from work since last Sunday. Thursday night, I worked at the front desk and work was so boring and there was so little to do that I almost fell asleep in my chair.

Caitlin went home this weekend for the J-Biebs concert, so I didn’t think I’d be doing too much because we usually hang out all weekend. Friday night, one of the girls from Authentic and a few other girls asked if I wanted to go see “Perks of Being a Wallflower” with them and I was excited they invited me! So we stopped at Walmart to get candy and snacks first, then went to see it. Me and another girl from KC got really excited at the beginning because the movie theater company has a really funny introduction and we were looking forward to it.

“Wehrenberg” “Wehrenberg “Wehrenberg…”

The movie was good, and it got over around midnight. On the way back to school, we got stopped at… a sobriety checkpoint! I was super excited and I think it was all of our first times going through one. The police officer shined his light at all of us and got Erica’s license since she was driving and asked where we were coming from, and we said the movies, and he asked what we saw. He told us the last thing he was Magic Mike. Anyway it was pretty painless.

Saturday I worked at the front desk again and it was the best day so far. In the staff room there were Halloween cookies and candy bags for us. There was a baby shower in the community room and a lady asked us if we wanted cupcakes. We watched tv and listened to Taylor Swift’s new album. I got some homework done. One girl I was working with was painting her nails like that’s a totally normal thing to do as a front desk receptionist, but since she’s worked there for like 6 years I would trust her. Later she made us pizza pockets for dinner. If that’s the kind of stuff I get paid to do, I am more than happy.

When I got home Saturday night, Kayla, Tobi, and Deidre were getting ready to go to the quad for Halloween and I assisted with their costumes. The quad is where all the fraternity houses are/where the parties all are. I didn’t go to the quad last year but I kind of wanted to this year but I hadn’t made any plans. I texted Candace and asked if she was going, and she said their group was going in like an hour and a half, so I was like crap, I need to dress up! As you can see from my updated “about me” picture, I dressed as my old standby of hipster.

The quad was weird. It was all blocked off with orange plastic fencing so the only way in was through the Lambda Chi Alpha house. Police officers waited at the entrance and checked our Drury ID’s because they didn’t want anyone from Missouri State to get in. Also they wrote huge “M’s” for MINOR on our hands with a big fat black marker.  We danced in all the houses, watched a lot of people stumble down hallways and pass out in doorways, and my personal highlight was when a girl from that I haven’t seen in a while grabbed my hand, slurred “Do you remember me?” and then kissed me on the cheek. Also when two girls came around with pumpkin buckets and offered “Candy or Condoms?”

Worked again Sunday, got free pizza from a birthday party. Seriously, this is my kind of job.

Yesterday I woke up with a cold though. And last night, I slept for a grand total of… zero minutes! That’s right, I did not sleep a single second last night. My heart rate is really high and it felt like my body was/is  basically in panic mode. My whole body is sore from the cold and I CAN’T SLEEP! I emailed my professors around 4:00am because by then I basically decided I wasn’t going to class. Also I had to email the volunteer coordinator at the animal shelter, and I was scheduled to work today so I had to call in. Around 5:30am I called my parents and they told me to go to Walgreens when it opened (stupid, they aren’t 24 hours like at home) so I went at 7:00am and got some Benadryl to make me drowsy.

When I came back to the apartment I still couldn’t sleep, so I went to the nurse that opened at 8:30. She gave me some stuff for a cold, and told me to take another Benadryl. She told me to come back if my heart rate didn’t go down.

I just went back to the nurse. I can sleep for about 15 minutes at a time, even though it’s very shallow sleep and I wake up very suddenly. What is this shit??? It reminds me of when I had to go to the ER in the middle of the night on Christmas during senior year because I was dehydrated. They gave me an IV and I got knocked out to sleep, and it was awesome. I got a doctor’s appointment for 2:00, but I wish they would just give me an IV too, but I doubt that will happen. I hope I can get some sleep soon :-/

Cathy

P.S. I totally forgot it’s Halloween. Guess I am not in the “spirit”… haha get it, spirit
