Finals Week

12 Dec

Hi friends!

My semester was officially over as of Tuesday. I had 4 finals within two days, 3 of them being on Tuesday. And my grades are looking to be pretty decent this semester. I know they probably could have been better if it weren’t for my extreme laziness. Seriously, this probably has been the hardest semester for me to get through, not because of course content, but lack of motivation. Anyway I’m in CoMo for a few more days because they require my courtseying at HV. Poo.

I don’t really have much to blog about since I’ve mainly just had a lot of free time and not very many responsibilities to fulfill. But here are some highlights of what my first free days of break:

  • Tuesday I worked in the deli department! They had a huge catering order for the hospital. I basically made cocktail sandwiches for 6 hours. And I used the slicer to slice tomatoes. I love using the slicer. I also worked with the new manager. He told me if I ever need extra hours to let him know. Might have to take him up on that. I miss them in the deli.
  • Today I caught up on the newest episodes of New Girl, and also watched Into The Wild, and Harry Potter 8.
  • Today I also went shopping and spent too much money. But I got some good deals! That’s always important.
  • My backpack still smells like coffee because some basics decided to spill their coffee on the floor during my Physiology final, and I didn’t notice it and set my backpack right in it, thus soaking the bottom of my backpack and the bottom of all the contents inside. I was peeved.
  • I had TWO decent length conversations with our attractive neighbor this week in the hallway. I’m always good at being awkward and saying awkward things, which makes for awkward times. And of course, I was looking pretty nast nast both times. WAHHHH.
  • I spent an extensive amount of time researching the Taylor Swift and Jake Gyllenhaal relationship. Mainly because RED is one of my favorite songs right now, and there were speculations that it’s about the T+J relationship. Did you know that the RED album is mostly about that relationship? Fun fact.
  • Benedict Cumberbatch is out promoting the newest Hobbit installment. So I’ve also spent an extensive amount of time YouTubeing those videos. It’s the only logical thing to do. He’s so awesome.

That’s all for this week.

Peace out, girl scouts.

European Adventures

5 Dec

So much has happened since I last blogged! I guess the main headliner would be that Kendyl, Derek, and I went to Europe. I cannot explain what an amazing trip it was. It’s going to be hard to condense everything we did/saw/ate in 10 days into one blog post. But I’ll attempt it.

Friday we left KC. Cathy picked us up at the airport the next day and we rode the TUBE back to Cathy’s school where we hung out for a little bit before we could check into our hostel. Later we dropped off our bags at the hostel and took a tiny tour of the city. We walked past Buckingham Palace, met Ben, saw the London Eye, and tried to meet up with Becky. That night we went out with Cathy and her friends. We danced, we laughed, and we had a good time. When the night was over, Kendyl, Derek and I walked back to the hostel because the tube was closed and the bus we needed to catch was not running. That whole process took probably an hour.

Combined with loss of sleep/clubbing/walking across town/jet lag, the next day (Sunday) I didn’t get out of bed until 1130. We met up with Becky and her friends and saw the Tower of London and walked across Tower Bridge. Then we had our first fish and chips meal in London at a pub near Tower Bridge. I ordered a Guinness because I wanted the full British experience. LOL. It was all very delicious. Later that evening, we got tickets for the London Eye, walked across Millennium Bridge and went out with Cathy and her friends to the Met. Cathy, Kendyl, and I all had strawberry Pimms. It was very delicious and it made me feel ever so British to be drinking Pimms.

Monday we had tickets booked for a morning trip to see Stonehenge! It’s about 2 hours outside of London so we got to sleep on the bus, which was nice. Even though it was a very cold, windy, and cloudy day, stones were very majestic! We got back into town later that afternoon and met up with Cathy and walked over to King’s Cross to take pictures at Platform 9 ¾. They have people who work the area, and I’d just like to say I would really like to have their jobs. Anyway, Cathy had plans with Becky for the night so Kendyl, Derek and I just walked around the area of our hostel and shopped for souvenirs/ourselves and had another meal of fish and chips at The Rocket. I LOVE FISH AND CHIPS.

Tuesday morning we got up early and walked to the British Museum before we met up with Cathy for HOGWARTS (aka The Harry Potter Studio tour)! The museum is HUGE and I wish we could’ve had more time there because it had some really interesting artifacts. We only had enough time to see about one floor of the museum which was mainly things like Ancient Egypt and Roman Empire and Ancient Greek, etc.

The journey to Hogwarts was kind of long. We took the tube to Euston Station where we caught a train to Watford Junction. From the train, we had to ride a shuttle bus to the actual studio. We retrieved our pre-booked tickets and then we were able to enter Hogwarts. From the Great Hall, to riding broomsticks, to butter beer and the magical Hogwarts Castel and the wands at the end, it was kind of emotional kind of day. If I had to describe that day in one word, it would have to be MAGICAL (as cliché as that sounds)!! We ate dinner at Pizza Express and then we went out to The Met again. Strawberry Pimms were ordered again, of course.

Wednesday morning we went back to the British Museum because we realized we didn’t see the Rosetta stone! Then we walked around town for some souvenir shopping, ate some of Ben’s Cookies then met up with Cathy since we had plans to take a picture at Abbey Road, LIKE THE BEATLES. They have photographers that take pictures for you once traffic slows. We let them use Kendyl’s camera, so we’ll have to wait until she uploads that to see how it turned out! After that we met up with Becky and her friends at Big Ben to get more pictures, and saw Westminster Abbey. Then we walked to Hyde Park where there’s a Christmas Market and where we had booked tickets to ice skate. I’ve only ice skated one other time like 3 years ago. I was super nervous, but after a while I think I started to get the hang of it, even though I fell multiple times. I’m still hurting from it actually. But it was so fun, and I’m definitely up to do it again! After that we went to see Harrod’s and felt like peasants just walking through the store. Then we took the bus to Chinatown and had some Chinese for our last night in London.

The next morning we rode the Chunnel to PARIS! We got there around 9, purchased Metro tickets and eventually found our hostel. We dropped off our luggage and headed for the Eiffel Tower, which we climbed up to the 2nd floor, 600+ steps! It was a pretty view though. We also walked past Napoleon’s Tomb, but didn’t realize it until after we were there. After the Eiffel Tower we decided to head back since it was getting kind of late and we were hungry. My thanksgiving meal consisted of a Baggett and a coffee nut cake from a nearby bakery. It was delicious.

Friday we got our day started pretty early since we had so much to see. We first walked down the Latin Quarter, then walked past the Sorbonne. From there we walked to Notre Dame, then had Nutella Crepes from a café not too far away. They were SO GOOD. SO GOOOOOD. We stopped at ate them on a bench on a bridge over the Seine. The next stop was the Louvre. We saw Mona and Venus de Milo and a lot of other artworks. After that we walked down Champs Elysees where all the fancy shops are. On our way there, we walked through a Christmas Market and surprisingly ran into Becky and her friends! Anyway, Kendyl and I got Macaroons from Laduree. I got 4 small ones (salted carmel, coffee, lemon, and passion fruit)! They were suppes taste! We then walked down to see the Arc de Triomphe. It was pretty misty/rainy/cold at this point. But we continued on our journey and walked to the Eiffel Tower to get some more pictures of it all pretty and lit up. We turned in kind of early again since we had to leave early to catch the train to Brugge.

At the train station, Kendyl was the only one who was able to print her ticket off. Meanwhile, Derek and I apparently didn’t even have reservations for a train ticket and 103 euros later, we boarded a different train and met Kendyl at our hostel. There was a free walking tour so we jumped on that opportunity and saw the beauty that is Brugge. Christmas Markets seem to be the thing in Europe because there was on right in the center of town here too. After the tour, we ate some Belgian fries from a stand in the square, then we went to the brewery tour of the only brewery left in town. Of course we got free brews afterwards. We went back to the hostel, met our British roommates, and went back out to find some things to eat and just to explore the city.

The next day we rented bikes and biked the perimeter of the city. This included me running over a lady and her dog, well kind of. But mainly I was just happy I’ve improved at bike riding! At about 3.5 hours of bike riding, my body was not happy and I just kept falling of my bike, thankfully it was time to return the bikes. I wish my camera didn’t run out of batteries the night before because there were so many picture opportunities that I missed. After that, we saw the blood of Christ and we kind of just shopped for souvenirs for the rest of the day. Towards the end of the night we stopped at a waffle place where we all got ice cream and waffles. It was seriously the most delicious waffle I have ever tasted. We sat there for quite some time since we were all so tired from walking around. We turned in kind of early since we had to be up early again to catch a train to Brussels, then catch the EuroStar to London. No travel problems this time though.

Once in London, I got Silver Linings Playbook to read on the plane ride back, and we all got some last minute souvenirs, then sat in Russell Square Park and watched the pigeons before we were set to meet up with Cathy at 1230 at Baker Street Station so we could go to the airport together. Since we got to the station a bit early I bought us all Ham and Mature Cheddar croissants from Treats at the tube station since I was the only one who had pounds left. Also of note, I DID NOT see Benedict Cumberbatch or Eddie Redmayne at all while in Londey Lond. 😦

We got to the airport pretty early, checked in our bags, and said goodbye. Saying goodbye was hard. But wombs will be reunited soon enough! 😉 We boarded our flight and we took off probably about 15 minutes late, meaning we got to ORD 15 minutes late. We had to go through customs, grab our bags off the carousel, then recheck them in and go through security again. Since the security line was what seemed to be like a million people long, and only having one line open, it took us almost an hour to get through and long story short, we missed our flight to MCI. The next direct flight out would be at 720am but we’d have to be waitlisted. So we booked a flight out to ATL where we’d catch a different flight to KC. The latter is what we ended up having to do. So we spent the night on the very uncomfortable floor of O’Hare.

We landed back home at around 130 but didn’t leave until after 2 since Kendyl and I still had to find our bags. My stepmom picked us all up and dropped us all off and I could not have been more happy to finally be home after that travel nightmare. That night, I went with Gentry, Lea, and Kendyl to see Catching Fire and unwillingly fell asleep due to lack of sleep the night before. I knew if I couldn’t stay up for that, there was no way I was going to stay up for the 2 hour drive back to Columbia. So I decided to stay home and sleep and wake up early to drive back in time to go to my last 8 am lecture.

Yesterday I also worked at HV for 7 hours and it was probably a bad idea since I still hadn’t fully recovered from jet lag/exhaustion yet. After work I basically passed out until this morning. It was nice. Today I had my last class of the semester. How weird. Now I just have finals and work left. I’m still in shock at how fast this semester has gone by! And also, 20 days until Christmas. WHAT?!

Peace out, girl scouts!

We’re Going to Hogwarts!!

14 Nov

EIGHT DAYS. Tomorrow will be SEVEN DAYS. AKA… ONE WEEK!!

Yesterday we bought our tickets to Hogwarts. Well not literally because the fact of the matter is Hogwarts is fictional, unfortunately. 😦 But we are officially going to the Harry Potter Studio Tour and I couldn’t be more excited!! Also we’ve been researching tours for Stonehenge, and looking up different attractions for our other destinations. I really cannot believe it’s pretty much one week away. WHAT!???

On Tuesday, I attend a 4-handed piano recital for my music appreciation class. It was based on new age composition pieces. It was weird and so abstract, I didn’t really realize music could be that way. But I guess it was “weird” from my perspective because it was first of all, a type of music I’m not familiar with, thus pushing me out of my comfort zone. It was a new experience though and I didn’t particularly hate it.

This past weekend I worked at the HV. Sunday was probably the worst of the days. We started to get a rush around 9am. Someone came through the line buying various groceries and 2 glass jars of concentrated juice. They said plastic was fine, so I proceeded to place the jars in plastic, tear the bags off the hook, lift up said bags to put in the basket, and BAM. The plastic bag rips open at the bottom, jars fall out, crash to the floor and juice and glass ends up everywhere. Long story short, it took me at least an hour to clean it all up. After sweeping up the glass, I had to re-mop the floors at least 3 times because there was always one spot that I seemed not to notice was still sticky. Then I had to re-dry the floor 3 times since it was in a heavily trafficked area. Thankfully they let me go on break after that. It was rather embarrassing.

Tomorrow/this weekend we’re having a sort of get-together before we leave for Londey Lond. Derek is coming down, T-monies is making an appearance. And John is coming too, which is going to be the QUERDEST OF THE QUERDS. I’m so suppes suppes nerve nerve. I mean this has been going on since like July, but I didn’t think meeting up was ever literally going to happen. But it is. LIKE WHAT?!!

Peace out, girl scouts.

15 days.

7 Nov

15 days. THAT’S HOW MANY DAYS UNTIL LONDON. The other day I bought some milk and saw that the expiration date is on the 24th. Then I thought to myself, “Hum, this milk is going to expire when I’m in London.” Also, today my foreign monies came in for the trip. And earlier this week we booked our train tickets for Paris and Bruges. Also, today I watched Winning London on YouTube. I used to borrow it from the library all the time. Also my life will literally be this BuzzFeed article once we get to London.

Monday I had an advising meeting, which was kind of pointless. I just sat there and told my adviser what I had planned on taking because I don’t really have a set schedule of things I need to take since I’m just sort of wasting time. I’m kind of taking prerequisites for other nursing schools so I can also apply to them next semester. But as of right now, it looks like I’ll be at 14 credit hours Monday through Thursday, taking English 2, Med Term, Public Speaking, Biology Lab, and Foundations of Art. I tried so hard to get by with just 12 credits but it was difficult to with biology only being 2 credits. Beginning Chinese was an option but I decided against it since they meet every single day in conjunction with a one day a week lab, also it was 6 credits. O.o

I’ve come to the conclusion that I am so tired of school. My work ethic as well as my attendance in most of my classes has gone down a bit (the only class I haven’t skipped at least once this semester is my music appreciation class, which is the class I probably could actually skip because it’s so easy). And being completely honest, this is probably the laziest I’ve ever been. For example, yesterday I accomplished nothing, except for watching a lot of Netflix. I watched a couple episodes of Breaking Bad, rewatched an episode of Sherlock, and watched 21 & Over. Have you guys seen Say Anything? It’s an 80’s Rom-Com and I watched it yesterday too and it was the greatest. Anyway, if JR were to hold up a boom box at my window… LOL. JKJK. 😀

Peace out, girl scouts.

PS. Sorry for the mass rambling of this post. I didn’t really know what to write about this week.

Wednesday thief

2 Oct

I just blog when I feel like it.

Well I missed out on blogging on Friday because Moritz was here, and let’s face it, I was too busy having fun with him in London to write a blog post. And let’s also face it, Tristan isn’t going to blog because he’s promised us he would for like the past 5 weeks and he never has, so why should we believe he’s going to today?

Of course the weekend was really wonderful. You can read about it in more detail at my other blog if you want. Here’s still a few pictures though.

Saturday night we were going to go out to a club, but we started drinking rum in my room so we never ended up going. We played a reaction game on his phone, so that was really funny. Also I tried to jump on my bed and fell on the floor. I have a few bruises to show for that. Haha. Also, it was really weird sharing a tiny bed in a room with two other roommates. It was actually kind of weirder because Hanna was gone for 3 nights so then it was just us two and Megan.

We had to get up at 3:15am on Monday morning so he could get to the airport on time. I got home at 5:30 and skipped my classes and slept until noon. You see some pretty interesting things on the night bus is all I can say.

Monday I pretty much laid in bed for 5 hours until I went to Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre to see A Midsummer Night’s Dream with my theatre class. We had standing tickets, which was okay because we were super close to the stage. It was a good play because I’ve seen this one before, plus we read it in eighth grade, so I knew what was going on. It was a little long though and it was like 11:15pm by the time we got home.

Yesterday I was a little homesick for the first time really since I’ve been here. I think I was just feeling lonely since Moritz had left and it was back to school and stuff like that. This study abroad thing can be hard. It’s a dream but it also can be challenging. But I got over it pretty soon. Last night I also went to the student bar for the first time and had my favorite drink, Bacardi and pineapple juice. And then I went to the vending machine twice, and skyped with my family later.

This weekend half of my friends are going to Edinburgh, Scotland on a school trip and half are going to Dublin. I’m not going to either because I want to save money and I’m going to Dublin in 2 and a half weeks anyway. I hope I don’t get lonely but it might be nice to have a few days to myself to go out and do some photography and shopping.

Here’s some really good news for me: Carrie’s friend’s dad is coming to London over the weekend, and my mom told me that he will bring me some stuff from home that I want. For example, some t-shirts, yoga pants, and leggings. All things that for some reason I didn’t pack when I came here?? Also my black flats, which I can’t remember if we threw away before I came but I really hope not because I always need black flats and can’t find any here that I can justify spending that much money on.

I guess that’s all. I’m not feeling very good today so I was hoping this would distract me, but I have to go write a paper.

Cathy

P.S. The government’s shut down and I’m a little jealous that I’m not home for that

Random Mumblings

16 Sep

Hello everyone. It has been 2 weeks since I last blogged so here is a quick summary of the very boring past 14 days of my life, and I apologize for the good grammar skills I will not be using in this post.

  • I pre-ordered the new Naked and Famous album
  • I pre-ordered the new Chvrches album
  • I showed 2 attractive girls at the mountain bike trails how to change a flat tire after they singled me out in a lot full of people and asked for help, But I didn’t realize that they were heavily flirting with me and hinting we should swap #’s until after I was half way home and replaying the situation in my head while slapping myself and yelling stupid stupid stupid stupid stupid
  • I spent a lot of time Longboarding
  • I got a new phone
  • I finally got an Instagram  http://instagram.com/derek_neely
  • I saw a Bald Eagle swoop down and snatch a squirrel
    • I felt bad for the squirrel for a while
    • I then thought about how badass that eagle was
    • I then felt bad for the squirrel again
    • I then weirdly felt very patriotic
  • I got paid
  • I filled up my gas tank
    • I saw how much it cost
    • I then was sad for a while
  • I won in fantasy football
  • I randomly wanted to be a mail man
    • I wondered what the chances were that my acceptance letter to Hogwarts was lost by a mail carrier
    • I then no longer wanted to be a mail man
  • I worked during both Chiefs games
  • I wrote this

I am pretty excited for the  Buzz beach ball music festival in 2 weeks, and incredibly excited to go see The Naked and Famous live in October

Peace, Love, and Happiness

Me and Harry Potter Are Starting Classes on the Same Day

31 Aug

Hello everyone, Cathy here reporting from London freaking England. My day for blogging this semester is theoretically Friday because Tristan took my normal day of Wednesday but he has yet to blog so I might reclaim it. Actually it’s already Sunday here but whatever, this is like the first time I’ve had any time to myself so I’m just gonna blog late this time.

Earlier I wrote a ton of stuff for my travel blog, and I decided I’m probably always gonna just go ahead and post a link to it if I think it’s interesting. That way I don’t have to say everything twice but also I can make that one more thorough, and if you’re really interested you can read it as a supplement to this one. Also I decided I’m going to say some things on this one that I might not necessarily want to share with the whole social media world since I’m posting that one to Facebook and Twitter. Here is a safe place to talk, even though half of our moms read this (lol).

Well, London is off to a great start. Everyone is really nice and it seems easy to make friends. I’ve been hanging out a lot with my roommates, Hanna and Megan, who are also from Drury, and getting to know them. I love living with them so far and we laugh sooooo much. Our beds are in a little row and it kind of feels like one giant slumber party. Every morning we wake up at the same time and immediately just start talking. Also, we all wear the same shirt and shoe size so we have been sharing a lot of things. It would appear that one of them has no qualms about being completely naked in front of us. Our RA told our floor that we should write our name on the outside of our door so people know where we live, and we had the idea to take a funny Awkward Family Photo or something and put it out there, so I hope we eventually do that. I think I’m going to have a really fun semester with them and I think we will be really good friends for a long time.

Megan, me, Hanna

Megan, me, and Hanna tonight at a pub called The Volunteer

We’ve gone out the past three nights with a lot of other students from Regent’s. We also hang out with the only boy from Drury and about 7 or 8 other people we met. Two nights ago, we were at a huge bar over near Piccadilly Circus (which is kind of like TImes Square) that had like four floors. One guy in our group met some English guy in the bathroom and introduced him to all of us. He and one of the girls started talking a lot and ended up talking for the most of the night. They kissed when we were about to leave, and they talked a little more, and guess what? She found out he was 30 years old. So she has an interesting story to tell about her second night in London.

One of the funniest things about being here are the super basic phones that we bought so that we can keep in touch with each other or use in an emergency. Everyone has iPhones which work great as long as you have Wifi, which a lot of places do, but you still can’t call. I bought this phone for 25 pounds – the phone cost 5 and I got 20 pounds of calling credit. Me and Hanna kind of love these phones. We get so excited when we get a message and we only have like 4 contacts each. It has this really basic Bejeweled game on it and we laughed really hard this morning when Hanna said, “I’m going to play Bejeweled for a while and then I’m going to take a shower.”

IMG_1825

Other than a lot of orientation activities, I’ve really had a chance to use the Tube (Underground/subway) a lot and learn how to use it effectively. It’s pretty fun and not that difficult to figure out. I also finally got to see a lot of the good sights and do a little shopping for necessities like towels and alcohol (just kidding on that.) I’m trying soooo hard to save my money but in this first week it goes so fast because there are so many things you have to pay for, like a prepaid card for the Tube, a boat party/booze cruise, and toothpaste. The food at the cafeteria is okay. I feel like I do a lot more walking than eating substantial food so I will probably be pissed if I don’t lose any weight this semester.

I start classes on Monday, September 2nd, which I don’t know what supplies I need or even where the classes are at so hopefully I find that out sometime. I realized that Harry Potter and I are starting classes on the same day. In the book he always went back Hogwarts on September 1st and then school started the next day. We’re such twins because I’m in England too and King’s Cross Station is right here in London. I kind of feel like my school is a little bit Hogwarts. I need to go to Platform 9 3/4 soon. And do laundry, but not at Platform 9 3/4.

I’m gonna leave it at that for now, check out my other blog at http://cathyinlondon2013.wordpress.com if you want to read in detail about my Germany-Italy trip and more about London!

Cathy

P.S. I just keep getting so excited when I think about you guys coming to visit and us riding the Tube together and going to all my favorite places that I haven’t discovered yet.

Rest In Pieces to My Summer

7 Aug

Well, the end of my summer is nigh. I’m down to 5 days until I leave for my semester in London now.

Last Sunday (July 28) was my last day at IHOP. Since then, I’ve been all about trying to have as much fun as I can with the people here that are important to me.

My family and I went camping in our backyard on Saturday night. We played 20 questions in the tent and Harry Potter Uno, just like always. On Sunday morning, we went to IHOP (not the one I worked at) for breakfast to celebrate my parents’ anniversary. It’s actually on August 19 (but we won’t all be around on the 19th this year) and we started the tradition of going on their anniversary 13 years ago in San Antonio, Texas, when we were on vacation there. That was back when you could be on vacation on August 19 because school didn’t start until September. Those were the days. Anyway I was definitely an expert on the menu when we went the other day. I didn’t even need to open mine to know what I wanted and I was able to counsel my family members on their breakfast choices by providing guidance and ingredient information.

Here are the things that Derek, Kendyl, Megan, and I did last week: went to Derek’s house, had breakfast at Burger King, almost went to a Silversun Pickups concert, changed our mind and went to a movie downtown, had homemade chow mein at Megan’s, went to World Market (world market, we’re talkin’ bout world market), had pie from Burger King, and made sushi just to name a few activities.

Yesterday was also a very fun friend-filled day. We (along with Gentry) went to the Kansas City Zoo and we rode the Skyfari. It was pretty fun, unfortunately it started getting pretty hot and then we really needed to get out of there. Then we took a trip to Oklahoma Joe’s Barbecue for lunch and all had the Z-Man sandwich except for Gentry. Lolz.

Later I invited them over to my house for dinner because we’ve eaten dinner a lot at Megan’s house this summer but not at mine. My mom made us stuffed shells and I made cupcakes. It was really nice sitting around the table and talking for hours. Also I learned how to do the cup song from Pitch Perfect.

I decorated these cupcakes with the UK flag 😉

friends

These three will be visiting me in November! Love them ❤ #london2013

Well, there’s definitely more fun to come at the end of the week. Friday is Megan’s birthday and we’re going to have dinner and swim at Kendyl’s house, then go camping 😉 And Saturday night I’ll go to the Sporting KC soccer game with my dad, just the two of us.  We went to a game last fall and it was awesome so I’m pretty excited for that too! 🙂

Don’t know if I’ll blog again before I leave for Europe, I doubt it 😉

Rest In Pieces to my summer (and to gray squirrel).

Back to School

23 Jan

Well, here I am, back at school. Upon my return, I was pleasantly surprised at how clean I’d left my room before break. I watched the Bachelor which was clearly much more important than unpacking.

Yesterday I had all three of my Spanish classes in a row. I think I’m going to like this. It really gets me “in the zone” to the point where I begin composing my text messages in Spanish when class gets over. And I have the same teacher who I love for the two of the classes. Basically all we did was say to the class: “Me llamo Cathy. Estoy en mi segundo año de universidad. Mis especializaciones son Español y Advertising and Public Relations. Soy de Kansas City.” Yep. Said that 3 times yesterday, mostly to people that I already knew and certainly to people who had already heard it once or twice that day.

I had a little bit of a book catastrophe. I gave my mom the list of 8 books before I went to Germany and she told me that she was able to get 6 of them. Unfortunately, at that point in time, the list I found on the website seemed not to have been updated. So one book I have is flat out wrong, and I still need 5 additional ones. How did my professors know about my passionate love for spending all my money on textbooks?

Last night was my first day of work at the new facility, and also my first day since like 6 weeks ago. During these 6 weeks, they also changed the computer system that is used so I had a feeling I was going to be really dumb and not very helpful at this job. I was right. But I learned a lot. I’m not sure if this was intentional but this center seems to have been built so that the receptionists can’t just sit in literally the same spot for the whole night and conduct all necessary business. Nope, there’s a lot more getting up and walking around and not being as lazy. Actually, I’m sure it was intentional. Lol. Also, they caught a mouse like 10 seconds after I walked in the door. Classy!

Not much else to say except that I’m really excited for this semester! I’m just trying to forget about last semester, The Semester From Hell, and I’m feeling really re-energized and positive and ready to get into these classes that I might actually be interested in. I hope it lasts!

Oh, and I’m really glad I got to see most of you over break, with the exception of Derek! Too bad we weren’t all home at the same time though! And Germany was awesome of course, I already talked about it with Megan and Kendyl but I also updated the “Our Travels” section of the blog!

Hope your guys’ first week (or second) (or 70-somethingth day of snowboarding) is going well!

Cathy

RIP to my favorite band and almost to me graduating ever.

This past weekend was Jack’s Mannequin’s final show(s) ever. I am very distraught by this fact but feeling extremely lucky that I got to go to their concert last year. Last week I was searching for “Jack’s Mannequin” on ebay to see if there was any good merchandise, and I came across something that I thought only existed in my dreams: a large square poster of their first CD cover (my favorite) called Everything in Transit, which just so happened to be AUTOGRAPHED! It was even better than in my dreams! I’d pretty much given up hope on ever finding something like that, because I figured that it probably didn’t even exist in the world, but somehow it did. The bidding started at $9.99, and I ended up winning with a bid for $35. Not even feeling guilty about it. Totally worth it, good thing I have a job now right? Anyway, I’ve spent a lot of time this weekend watching videos of the concert on youtube and feeling nostalgic.

There were about 30 minutes this week where I thought I was just going to quit college, fo rillz. Wanna know why? Because of this damned little thing called class registration. I started preparing for this weeks ago. I had every semester planned until graduation, with everything I needed to get my Advertising and PR major, and Global Studies and Spanish minors. Students with more credit hours started registering last week, and I decided to go online and see how many seats were still open in the two classes that I absolutely NEEDED to take next semester, because they are pre-requisites to pretty much every communication class ever. So I go to the course search, and what do I find? BOTH OF THEM WERE EFFING FULL. WHAT!!!??? I didn’t understand! WHAT upperclassmen were signing up for these classes!? Surely if they really needed them, they would have taken them much sooner than the second semester of their junior/senior year?! I frantically emailed both professors asking them what I should do, I was also grudgingly thinking about having to move my study abroad to next spring…

Then I went into the living room to pout. I recounted my story of endless woe to Caitlin and Kayla. Caitlin asked me if I was sure that I was looking at the courses for spring semester, not fall. So I went back, and sure enough, I was looking at the courses that were already full because they were happening THIS semester. Whoops… then I checked spring semester and only like 2 or 3 seats were taken in each. You know what I had to do then, right? I had to email those professors and be like, lol jk, false alarm. But I was so happy that I gained my life back, that I wasn’t even that embarrassed. In other news, due to a strange turn of events, I’m taking senior seminar in Spanish next semester, nbd. Also thinking about just going ahead and majoring in it too.

In other other news, QUIDDITCH CUP CHAMPION RIGHT HERE. Proud member of the Hulking Hippogriffs. Quidditch sign-ups were individual or in pairs, and on the day of the tournament, they assigned teams. Luckily, Caitlin and I got put on a team with two super-athlete Frisbee players, and a cross country runner who could be the Seeker. I did score a few goals though! 🙂

P.S. Question of the day: How the hell is Ms. Sparks’ nickname Libbi when her real name is Katherine??

Fall Break

17 Oct

Hello, I am on fall break right now and it’s awesome.

The week has been pretty uneventful overall. Last Wednesday I had CPR training for 4 hours which was super boring if you couldn’t guess. Friday night I make cake batter bark and painted my nails gold.

Monday night I made cake batter puppy chow and I posted the recipe to it on the recipe tab. It was really good.

Also I had a Residence Life Association meeting, which that organization was pretty boring last year but this year so far it’s fun. We were planning for our Quidditch Tournament and decided to make a live-action, promotional video for… wait for it…

And I get to be Ron! (Ron, Ron, Ron Weasley!) We’re hoping it’s going to go viral.

Yesterday I had “orientation” for my new job which also lasted 4 hours but I learned not to sexually harass my co-workers (darn) and what to do if there’s an armed robbery. I start next week and I got 16 hours.

Today I had a big fail in Spanish because we were discussing some literature and every time I tried to say anything I just felt like I didn’t know Spanish anymore. So one time I just said “Pienso que…” (about 7 seconds silence of me trying to figure out what I wanted to say about the poems) “Okay I don’t know how to speak Spanish today.” But I blame my teacher because she cancelled class on Monday so I guess I got pretty rusty since Friday.

The drive home today kind of sucked because of stupid people who don’t put their headlights on when it’s pouring rain, so incidentally their tail lights are also not on, so incidentally you can’t see where the damn car in front of you is. I even flashed my high beams at them, hoping they would get the memo but nope, didn’t work.

But the drive home was really beautiful with all the different colors of leaves, I kind of wanted to just pull over and take pictures all the time but I’d probably still be driving if I decided to act on that compulsion.

I just watched a new TV show called “The Neighbors” and it was really weird but I think I liked it.

And I took a 3 hour nap on the couch today as soon as I got home.

real life honey badger right here

18 Apr

Hi everyone. Good news – school is almost out! Not as soon as it is for some certain lucky people named Derek and Morgan, but oh well!

Saturday I woke up and got very excited because Becky texted to say POTTERMORE was open! I have had this website set as my homepage for over 6 months, so you can imagine my frustration when THE INTERNET WAS DOWN BECAUSE OF THUNDERSTORMS. But never fear, I had Becky create me an account.

Then about an hour after waking up, I got a really bad migraine, complete with feeling nauseated… and it hadn’t gone away after about 3 and a half hours, two ibuprofen, and some Excedrin Migraine. My mom suggested that I go to the emergency room. So I called Kayla and luckily she was able to take me. I got there around 12:45pm. They put me in an awkward bed in the hallway, and apparently they wanted to do a CT scan on me and my mom was like “no, tell them not to, that’s unnecessary.” Eventually they gave me an IV with Benadryl because apparently that helps, but first they ruptured a vein in one of my arms which caused me to freak tf out. I finally got to leave around 5:30, and with my appetite fully restored, I took Kayla to Panera for dinner since she helped me out so much by taking me to the hospital. That night I went to her hometown, Republic, with her to help take some things home.

When I got home, POTTERMORE was ready for me! I got sorted into HUFFLEPUFF!!! I’m really excited, because Hufflepuffs are particularly good finders, and what the HELL is a Hufflepuff? Those two famous quotes are from A Very Potter Musical, which I still haven’t seen but I feel like I can use these jokes regardless. Also, HONEY BADGER DON’T GIVE A SHIT so guess what? I already knew that about myself.

Sunday morning I woke up with a headache again, which mostly had gone away by 3pm. I really don’t know what I did Sunday.

Monday I woke up at… 9:13! Class starts at… 9:00! It was the only time I have overslept like that all year! I made it to class by 9:20. My Spanish teacher told me “Buenas noches” when I arrived. Jerk. Also, I got my 8 page research paper back from Alpha and I got an A+ !

A lot of my classes are cancelled this week. One was cancelled Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, AKA every day that we have class (and next week too), one was cancelled Thursday, and another is cancelled Friday. AKA even the teachers want to go home for the summer.

Oh and for one class I have to job shadow a minimum of 6 hours, so I went to the career center and they set me up with a 2010 Drury grad who is manager of communications at a community hospital in the area, so I think that will be pretty cool. I’ll do that Friday and Wednesday.

I registered for classes and got into everything I wanted/was necessary. Spanish, “Fit for Life,” Calculus I, Sociology, and Global Futures.

Got my computer science test back, got a 46%, and the way I look at it, I’m happy it was higher than my previous all-time awesome score of 39%. That is what you call success.

not caring about school anymore because there is only 1 month left

11 Apr

Today is the first day in a while where I don’t know what to write about, but I will try to think of something.

I always do. Thursday at 3 I left to go home for Easter, which was cool. Friday morning I had an interview for a summer job at UpDog; it was super chill and the guy who interviewed me didn’t write my answers down or anything, we just had a conversation. I think I’ll get the job.

Friday I also found out I did get selected out of like 60 people to be an ambassador, I think I wrote about that in my last post but I pretty much knew I’d get it. Friday I went to church at 3 and we dyed Easter eggs that night. I had a video assignment due Tuesday, which I had not started on, hence I had to film at home. I used my dad’s video camera, but alas, I FORGOT MY FREAKING TRIPOD HEFOWAFNMKS;NVSDZK;NVD. What a pain in the ass. I had to conduct interviews by sitting my family down at the kitchen table and putting the camera on a peanut butter jar in order to achieve proper framing.

Saturday I did my photography assignment at Carrie’s soccer game, and that was fun because I hadn’t been to one of her games since last season (fall). Moritz told her to score a goal for him before the game (she never scores goals) and lo and behold… she did! I also made mini Easter cheesecakes that I found on pinterest, and they had devil coconut on it. But I don’t mind coconut. Then we went from church from 8-10pm, and I’m almost 100% sure that I was the last one to blow out my candle when they told us to. (I kept letting mine stay lit for like 5 extra minutes.)

Sunday was Easter, Carrie woke me up too early at 8:00 am, and I went downstairs to my awesome Easter basket, including about 30,000 calories worth of chocolate. I still have this weird thing going on where I never have much of an appetite, so I didn’t eat a lot of it yet, and I left it at home when I came back to school. Who IS this person that I’m turning into?! My dad had been saying that there would be no “Amazing Race/Easter Egg Hunt” this year (Morgan, you can understand what I’m talking about) but we ended up having one anyway, he tricked us 🙂 It was a little shorter though, but it was still a lot of fun, and included but was not limited to: filling a sock up with lima beans in a relay race, sitting on a bench in a small cemetery, going to an arcade, giving cookies to firemen, and “destroying the Horcruxes” by using a slingshot to shoot marbles at 6 plates with pictures of Voldemort, Lucius Malfoy, Draco Malfoy, Professor Umbridge, Bellatrix Lestrange, and Dementors taped to them. I broke Voldemort.

Sunday night I decided I didn’t feel like driving back to school, so I played hooky on Monday! (My first time for these classes, but they are MWF at 9, 10, and 11 so I couldn’t really get back in time in the morning.) I did my Spanish homework that was due and emailed it to him. I woke up around 8:30 and left at 10:30. Got back at 1:30, skyped briefly (because Moritz is in Spain Tuesday-Thursday), and then proceeded to the Mac Lab to work on my video project.

What I was not anticipating was the fact that I had to transfer 20+ video clips to the Mac computer via MY 8GIG MEMORY CARD. That was annoying. I had to do it because a portable hard drive can’t be compatible with a mac and pc simultaneously. THEN I had to convert all the files to be able to be seen on Final Cut Pro, THEN they didn’t have sound so I had to convert them again. This took about 2 hours. By the time the video was done, I had spent a total of SEVEN CONSECUTIVE HOURS on this dang assignment. However, time went fast due to the high level of fun I was having.
Here’s the final product:

(hope you guys can see it)

Tonight we’re having an event called Sex on Campus, where the human sexuality teacher answers people’s anonymous questions. I signed up to “chalk” for the event, meaning write information on the ground outside around campus. I incidentally made a trail of sperm that lead to the building in which the event is held. Clever, I know.

I’m tired of typing, you’re probably tired of reading, see you on the flip side.

Tan lines

26 Mar

Warm weather on a weekend means great things. Warm weather on a Saturday that I have a Geology field trip means wicked tan lines. Wicked in a bad way- and not the kind of tan lines you would think of first like farmers tan or even sock tan. No, I have burnt ears and tan lines from the earrings I was wearing. For real.
So this last week was the first week back at school from Spring Break. Oh how I miss that break…
BUT coming back to school meant the start of my Ropes Course class! I love it super a lot. Tomorrow is our last day of team building activities and this Wednesday is the start of ground school, whatever that means (although I’m 90% positive that it’s the knot tying and belaying instruction).
Thursday (or technically Friday) I went to see THE HUNGER GAMES with my floor for the Midnight Premiere. Holy Cow! That movie was the greatest. It depicted the book almost perfectly and anything that was different wasn’t a huge distraction for me. It was by far the greatest book-to-movie experience I’ve had. (I did not get to enjoy Harry Potter like the rest of the world and that might have changed this opinion but I will never know.) Also I am proud to say that I loved these books before I everyone else was like “Everybody loves these books so I’m going to too.”- Yeah that wasn’t me.
Those are the big highlights from the week. I am looking forward to a job interview and the Finals of the NCAA tournament. GO KU! or Kentucky.. either one I’d be fine with because my bracket is already screwed because of Duke 😦
My job interview is Wednesday for the position of Bat Girl for our baseball team! I saw the posting for Bat Girl on our job bank and I thought it was a joke at first, but I sent my resume anyways and received an email saying the coaching staff wanted to interview me. Since then I have been playing email tag for the past week trying to set up a time that will work for both our schedules and it’s getting kind of ridiculous. I seriously just like 20 minutes ago had to reschedule again but the interview is final now.
So that’s all. Except today Kendal and I made a paper chain to count down the rest of the school year. I have 40 days including weekends until I am home and my summer begins! I really miss the humidity of home, no lie. When it’s even a little bit moist outside- yeah not even enough moisture in the air to call it humid- Greeley smells like pee.

Stay ahead of the crowd like me
~Morgan
p.s. I would love to think THE HUNGER GAMES is trending but it’s not… Actually I don’t really know anything about trending because I don’t know how to really work twitter yet. But whatevs.
