News and Nerves

29 Jan

It looks like none of you decided to/had time to blog this week but I have a little down time today so I will anyway.

This week has been very interesting. Being a student again and all. I finally got to go to Andy’s frozen custard on Friday night, thankfully. I needed it after four whole days of school. And I also needed Hurts Donuts on Sunday. By the way, I just realized this is my first five-day school week since about the first week of May. Yikes.

The past few days have had me kind of on-edge about various things. First of all, I had been trying to go back to where I was working last spring, and the manager had seemed like I could come back, no problem. Then he kind of told me that he wasn’t sure I’d get many hours because he’s hiring new people soon to replace everyone who’s leaving in May and they will get priority, so do I still want to come back? That kind of sucked but I said yes. So I went yesterday to fill out the paperwork to start working again. I was kind of nervous about that because I didn’t know if he would be mean or anything (he wasn’t). And he even wrote “15hr/week” on my paper. I’m starting again in a week and a half.

Then I had to go take a drug test. That made me a little nervous because I’m always afraid that a) I’ll make a mistake/do something wrong so it will mess up the results, b) that I’ll have “shy bladder”, or c) that for some reason it will say I’m on drugs when there’s absolutely no way it could be possible. I think it went okay though.

And while I was waiting for that, I got a message from my friend Jacy that our paper about Sandy Hook got accepted for the conference in Minneapolis that we sent it to, and we get to go! The thing that made me nervous about that, though, was that we took Kevin’s name off it even when our professor told us we shouldn’t (she didn’t reply to our email in time). So today I was nervous because we decided to go talk to her and ask what we should do and if she was mad at us for taking it off.

She wasn’t mad and she laughed instead and said she had a feeling we’d done that. But then she told us we have to face The Wrath Of Kevin on our own, which basically meant me because I have two classes with him where I sit right next to him. Shit. And I know that our two professors will probably announce to the class about our paper. Plus there will probably be a press release, a Comm department facebook post, and a story in the campus newspaper which Kevin writes for. So I don’t know, would it be better if I tell him before class one day before he has to hear it for the first time? Now I’m nervous about that. He can get defensive sometimes.

Well, on the bright side, Minneapolis!?

Cathy

UPDATE 7:20pm: I talked to him in the Commons, and I told him that Jacy and I had continued working on the paper and we took his name off… he didn’t even seem upset! He even said “I knew I wouldn’t be able to put any more work into it” so it all worked out 🙂 I think I need a drink now though lols

Verdict Watch

8 May

Uhhhh. It’s the last week of classes.

The good news is that my research project has almost finished. Jacy and I are still not on great terms with Kevin. It made us sick to have to put his name on the final paper since he did not do anything to contribute to the 18 pages of hard work.

When we made our posters, our classmates and the communication faculty had to vote on which one would win extra credit. Our poster tied with another group so we all got extra credit.

Kevin is the one who is kneeling in front of me. I thought I might have words to say to him because last night he said we had been “leaving him in the dark.” Boy, you put your own self in the dark. Don’t even.

Tonight I am getting initiated into the Spanish Honor Society. It’s just me and a few other girls from my class. Afterwards, we are going to our professor’s house and all of the Spanish professors are going to cook dinner for us! I think something Argentinean. I am pretty excited.

Speaking of Spanish, I overslept yesterday. I missed the same Spanish class that I overslept through a few months ago. Oops.

The only other notable thing is that we are officially on Verdict Watch for the Jodi Arias trial. Closing arguments ended on Friday, and the jury has been deliberating since Monday. They have deliberated for a total of 13 hours, 30 minutes, and 41 seconds so far.

I guess I don’t have much else to say.

UPDATE 3:02 pm: The verdict has been reached!!!! It will be announced at 3:30 central time!!!!!  30 minutes!!!!

May 1st is a holiday in Germany

1 May

If we were in Germany right now, we wouldn’t have school today. That would be so awesome. But sadly, no holiday here.

I bet you guys are all having a really fun time in school right now. The last three weeks is always the best ever. But actually it’s not too bad for me, at least not as bad as I was anticipating. Yeah, I have shit to do, but I’m staying on top of it and managing my time well so I am pretty proud of myself for that.

The thing that’s stressing me out the most is my group project that I’m doing for my Foundations of Communication Theory class. This is the big research project that we’ve been doing all semester about how the media framed the Sandy Hook shooting. Here’s some problems: one person in the group is just a dead weight, and me and my other partner are starting to resent him.

Today we had a huge poster due which is posted in the lobby of the communication building. Next Wednesday, our final 20-page paper is due. The next Wednesday, during finals week, we have to do a formal presentation. This project never goes away. It just makes it a little harder when one person decides that he’s not going to help anymore starting at the beginning of April when shit gets real.

On a related note, in case you didn’t see on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, Monday I got an award for the Outstanding Sophomore in the communication department (out of all three majors). There was a little get-together in the communication building and it was the first time they had one. They inducted some juniors into an honor society and gave out some awards (mostly to seniors). All my teachers kept telling us to go, and I knew there would be food and cake so I was like yeah sure I’ll go. Cake is one of my main food groups, after all.

I knew they would give out an outstanding award to each grade, but I know a lot of other good people and figured that since I have basically only been around for this semester, I didn’t stand a chance and that was fine. Plus, I knew one sophomore who is in a lot of upper-level classes already and I figured she’d get it before me, anyway. Almost everyone at the event was really dressed up because they were all getting inducted into the honor society. But I wasn’t. So I was really shocked when they called my name as the winner and then I was a little embarrassed because I was wearing a green tank top, jean shorts, and flip flops. (Turns out, the other sophomore who I thought would get the award is technically a junior according to credit hours, so she got outstanding junior. Haha.)

Anyway, that was probably the most exciting thing about my week. You guys know I’ve had a hard time figuring out what I wanted to study, and instead of choosing something or a few things and changing after a while, I kind of stubbornly refused to pick a major. But now I have two, and now I am so happy that I’ve figured it out and I know I’m finally going in the right direction for me. I only have classes for my majors this semester and it’s been the best semester ever, even though it’s by far been the most work.

P.S. If you ever read online that you can use applesauce instead of eggs when you bake brownies, don’t believe it because that is a lie.

This song makes me want to be a hippie, skip around barefoot in the forest, and go home mostly. Two more weeks!
