Real Life Again

22 Jan

Well, here I am in my fourth day back on the Lane. It’s really hard to believe that break’s already over, and I’m in Springfield again. The past two years of college, I always spent around half of my break in Germany, so it never felt very long. This year, even though I went to Germany, I still had four weeks of break at home and I was expecting it to go pretty slow since I wasn’t working or anything. I guess I was having too much fun with you guys and my family for it to go by as quickly as it did.

I can’t say that I’m unhappy to be back in Springfield though. I packed all my stuff, most of which was never unpacked from London, and on Saturday my family and I drove down here in three separate cars. We arrived around 4pm and went to Lambert’s for dinner. That’s our tradition. Then we went back to the hotel. In the morning, we drove all three cars over to school and I moved into my new apartment in University Suites. And it’s pretty suite. Did I tell you I forgot my textbooks at home? Basic. We ate at Fazoli’s and made our annual Walmart run, then Becky left to go to Rolla and the rest of my family went back home. I hung out with Carson and we waited for Hanna to get here.

Sunday night I hung out with Hanna and another roommate, Morgan, and some of their sorority friends. Woke up Monday morning not feeling so hot, haha… took a shower which was the worst shower of my life because the water was coming out too hard and then Madi (who we went to London with) picked Hanna and me up for lunch. I felt better by then, and when we came home Hanna and I went to Carson’s for a little. I had Panera for dinner and Caitlin came over to watch the Bachelor. I spent the rest of the night taking buzzfeed quizzes and hanging up the rest of my wall decorations.

Yesterday I had two classes, Intro to Environmental Science which I’m guessing will be just like my Climate Change class I had with the same teacher in fall 2012, and Communication and Ethics, which is with the teacher I had for Presentational Speaking class freshman year. I am about 99% sure he teared up at one point. I think that class will be good though. I met with the Spanish professor who will be doing my independent study with me and we decided on meeting days/times. I also talked to my manager at the family center and I emailed him my hours of availability so hopefully the ball gets rolling on that pretty soon. I skyped Moritz and then went to dinner with Hanna and Morgan, and we came back and sat in the kitchen and talked for about five hours and ate some chocolate cake and then went to bed.

This morning I woke up early at about 7:15 and took a shower, which I have now (mostly) fixed… for the first time, I didn’t get water all over the floor! I picked up my textbooks I ordered from the bookstore and ate breakfast in the commons (it’s omelette day). Then I went to my first class, Strategic Writing for Advertising and Public Relations. It’s my first 400-level Communication class, and it’s with my adviser/the head of the communication department, so I think it will be really tough but the teacher is so nice and I know she is going to teach me a lot. It’s my smallest class too, and a lot of us already know each other. One interesting thing about it, though, is that we have to dress “professional” every Wednesday and that’s actually part of our grade.

Then I had Web Communication with my Media Writing teacher from last year and we’re going to make our own website, so I think that will be pretty fun. I think I might do mine about London. He says we are required to buy our own domain and web server (since he only made us get one textbook. ha)

After class, I drove to Clinton, MO, which is about halfway between Independence and Springfield, to meet my mom so she could give me the rest of my textbooks (oooops). We had lunch at Applebee’s and I told her about my classes so far and she gave me my books plus some more stuff I requested like nail polish and hot chocolate. So I just got back about an hour ago.

Well, school’s off to a good start but I can definitely tell it’s going to be a busy and challenging semester. I proved I could handle it last spring, but let’s just hope that London didn’t make me too lazy and forget my good habits.

Ready for London!

18 Nov

I am officially registered for classes next semester I am taking 15 credit hours and I am weirdly actually excited to go back to being a full-time student. I am only taking two classes this semester public speaking which I hate with a passion, and college mathematics which I actually somewhat enjoy. Mainly because my professor is awesome but I occasionally find the math I am being taught to be interesting instead of stupid and boring like normal.

I am starting to get stressed about what I want to major in even though I have another semester to decide. I pretty much think about what I want to major in and do with my life several times a day every day, and constantly change my mind  and consider different things as I get more stressed out in a never-ending cycle of me being undecided.

I am on my second week working in before and after school child care and its growing on me. Not sure how or why, considering I have never liked beings around kids even the slightest. But after a horrible first week things are starting to look up for my new job and I think I will be able to tolerate working it through the rest of the school year.

I spent last weekend visiting Meewan and Kendz at Mizzou, we had a small get together Friday night with some friends and one gigantic slore of a douche bag. Then Saturday morning Kendyl and I spent several hours sitting at McDonald’s to avoid some awkwardness back at the apartment. Then we spent the majority of the rest of the day recording our awesome debut album (torturing the neighbors with our singing). Lawlz. On Sunday we finished up planning for London, and went to the park on a 60 degree day (Its November wtf weather?) so Meewan could practice riding her bike.

And last WE LEAVE FOR LONDON FRIDAY.

I am literally excited for every part of this trip and I mean every part. From airport security to the flights there to seeing Cathy for the first time in months to the death stare Kendyl and I will give Megan when she tries to use her fake British accent and last to all  incredibly fun, weird and probs awkward times we are going to have in Europe. This trip will be LEGEND Wait for It DARY.

Lists

29 Oct

I have written 6 speeches in the last 6 weeks for my public speaking class, which has led me to hate doing anything in an essay, speech, or story format. So I am going to stick with a list again because lists make me happy. So I give you my last to weeks in a randomly organized list

I have been to 2 concerts and seen 5 bands in the last 2 weeks. All the bands were awesome but Watsky and The Naked and Famous blew my mind.

The bands I saw ranked in order of Awesomeness

  1. Watsky
  2. The Naked and Famous
  3. Portugal The man
  4. Tie Between The Crystal fighter and The 1975

I started binge watching Weeds on Kendyls recommendation, and I am hooked on it. I watched almost 10 straight episodes today just because why not. From the time I have spent watching Weeds and Breaking Bad I am pretty sure I could be a highly successful drug dealer. Just saying. I have learned a lot about the business.

I started riding my BMX bike again instead of my mountain bike. I used to ride BMX back in middle school and although I was pretty good I never liked competing and I quit after a bad wreck. I might start racing soon if I can get in shape and see where it takes me. I still don’t know what to do with my life and along with a hundred other careers I have considered I might as well take a shot at BMX Racing.

This week I heavily considered choosing photography as a major. I think it would be awesome to be a freelance photographer who gets to travel the world documenting their journey. However although I like photography I dislike being told what to photograph so that thought may not go anywhere.

I had fast food every day last week. I am not bragging about this and I am disappointed in myself for it because I have been making an effort (a very poor one) at eating healthier mainly because diabetes doesn’t seem like much fun and that is likely where I am headed if I continue to only eat things that are fried, microwaved  or full of sugar.

This was has been the first week in over a year and after 2 knee surgeries that I haven’t had any pain or swelling in my right knee. To celebrate this I sprained my right ankle while walking down some stairs in darkness when I stepped on badly place tennis ball and fell down the rest of the stairs.

I still have a 100% in math. I am not sure how and I am very baffled by the fact that after years of failing math in high school all I ever had to do was try. I no longer have a 100% in Public Speaking buts that’s okay because I hate that class with a passion, and I look forward to torching all my speeches at the end of the semester.

I have been donating plasma twice a week for the last 4 weeks, and with some of my money from donating plasma I bought new clothes for the first time in I don’t know how long. I am way more excited about new clothes than any male should ever be.

I badly want to go surfing, I have never surfed before but it is one of the few remaining board sports I haven’t learned and I have always wanted to do it.

I am Amped for the 3 trips we have planned over the next several months. First Europe in less than one month, than Colorado in December, and last our great American road trip to the west coast next summer. I know they will all be wild and fun trips.

MIDTERMS

15 Oct

School/learning/education is not fun for me. I have ADHD and I am Dyslexic, meaning it is a hell of a task for me to focus on an assignment or study for a test. Despite this I have spent the vast majority of my last two weeks studying for midterms of which I have two for math and public speaking. I have also been weirdly motivated this semester to study and actually put effort into my classes for the first time ever and my effort has been paying off because I aced my math midterm last week to keep a 100% in the class (to my utter amazement). My public speaking midterm is tomorrow and I hope I get a high grade just to justify the amount of time I spent reading my boring ass textbook and notes.

My biggest problem with school is that I will eventually run out of general education classes to take, meaning I would need to declare a major. My dilemma with choosing a major is that working in one career field for the rest of life sounds terrible and I don’t want to waste money on a degree only to change my mind and take a career path where it is worthless. I also realize I could major in something general that works for all career fields like communications, but what if I get bachelors in communications only to decide I want to study martial arts in the remoteness of the Himalayan Mountains where I would never need it and that money and time is wasted. This seems like a weird scenario but the way my mind works it’s completely plausible, and it wouldn’t even be the weirdest thing I have considered doing.

I badly want to spend another winter living in Colorado, so 2-3 semesters from now when I run out of general education classes maybe that’s what I will do. Or maybe I will figure out how to be a normal college student like everybody else and actually pick a major and graduate.

Anyways, back to studying for me

Youths Everywhere

30 Sep

Since nothing exciting is happening with my life right now I am going to stick with ranting and mumbling like did in my last post. The last 2 weeks of my life and the happenings inside my head:

I have some jobs lined up for November when I will be unemployed

  • The leading candidate is a before and after school childcare job
    • I would  rather not talk about it

Last week I bought the new albums by Chvrches and The Naked and Famous

  • After downloading them to my mp3 player I disappeared into the woods on my mountain bike and shredded to two of my favorite bands for several hours
    • Yes I said “Shredded”
      • No I am not weird
      • Okay, I am incredibly weird. I had a one sided conversation with a caterpillar I almost ran over.
      • That^ made me realize I had been in the woods a little too long, so I went home

I remembered my car is a thousand miles overdue for an oil change

  • I then unremembered it not wanting to spend the money

I went to Buzz Beach ball

  • Awolnation, Alt J, Cage the Elephant, Little Green Cars, Daughter, and Phoenix rocked my face off
  • I also felt very rebellious the whole time due to being surrounded by fellow wild youths
  • So rebellious that I went home drank a glass of milk and went straight to bed

I caught up on world news for the first time in a while

  • I saw the number one news story was Miley Cyrus Twerking
  • I wasn’t sure if twerking was a health condition or a dance move
  • So I googled it
  • I then lost a little faith in humanity

I got paid

  • I paid my bills
  • I was then sad for a while
  • I calculated that I had 8 dollars of spending money for the month
  • I bought myself a shirt a the thrift store for 4 dollars
  • I now feel caught up on current fashion trends

I watched the Chiefs go to 4-0

  • All Hail The Chiefs

I watched the Breaking Bad Series Finale

  • It was EPIC
  • MY GOD IT WAS EPIC
  • Like seeing a Unicorn kiss Bigfoot Epic
  • Only Probably even for epic then that

Breaking Bad is my all time favorite TV series so it’s a little sad knowing its over

  • But its taught me so much about life
  • Which isn’t good since it’s about death, meth, and organized crime

I got stressed out on school for the hundredth time

  • So I made myself a nutella peanut butter sandwich with a glass of milk and wasted a stupid amount of homework time watching netflix

That is All

Also,

Tomorrow I am going to start giving plasma. I figure its a good idea since I have no fear of sharp things poking me, and I need extra money to fund my future world travels and adventures

Random Mumblings

16 Sep

Hello everyone. It has been 2 weeks since I last blogged so here is a quick summary of the very boring past 14 days of my life, and I apologize for the good grammar skills I will not be using in this post.

  • I pre-ordered the new Naked and Famous album
  • I pre-ordered the new Chvrches album
  • I showed 2 attractive girls at the mountain bike trails how to change a flat tire after they singled me out in a lot full of people and asked for help, But I didn’t realize that they were heavily flirting with me and hinting we should swap #’s until after I was half way home and replaying the situation in my head while slapping myself and yelling stupid stupid stupid stupid stupid
  • I spent a lot of time Longboarding
  • I got a new phone
  • I finally got an Instagram  http://instagram.com/derek_neely
  • I saw a Bald Eagle swoop down and snatch a squirrel
    • I felt bad for the squirrel for a while
    • I then thought about how badass that eagle was
    • I then felt bad for the squirrel again
    • I then weirdly felt very patriotic
  • I got paid
  • I filled up my gas tank
    • I saw how much it cost
    • I then was sad for a while
  • I won in fantasy football
  • I randomly wanted to be a mail man
    • I wondered what the chances were that my acceptance letter to Hogwarts was lost by a mail carrier
    • I then no longer wanted to be a mail man
  • I worked during both Chiefs games
  • I wrote this

I am pretty excited for the  Buzz beach ball music festival in 2 weeks, and incredibly excited to go see The Naked and Famous live in October

Oh no!

26 Aug

I’m a Junior in college!!! OH NO!
I haven’t gotten any school supplies, my room is still being moved into, my house is a weird empty mess, I already have plans made for me everyday this week for Navs, I start Bible study recruitment this week, my printer is still in somebody’s garage, and I don’t know if I have a pencil. I am so not physically ready for this year… but I am so pumped! I am living in a house with great girls, I have such great support through Navs, I get to lead a Bible study for freshmen women, my summer has really prepared me spiritually and emotionally, and I can’t wait to live life with these friends again. There are so many mixed emotions about this year but I am so ready to see where it takes me.

I can’t believe I’m a junior in college. I have a car. I have a pretty and confident smile. I have so many solid friendships. I am growing up! This is so weird but I think I love it.

Here’s to the new year, new friendships, new start.

Good luck to all of you starting your second week of college (and those traveling the world)

Morgan-out.

Queen of Procrastiation

15 Apr

I have declared myself Queen of Procrastination. I have far too many subjects that follow my lead. I apologize for being such a great leader in this quality.
Instead of writing this post I should be writing a critique on a piece of artwork. EW.
Also, HI MOM!  (I just found out that she reads this blog! ha)
So—- jk— I’m already done with my critique, I had vegetables for dinner, and my room is clean. (It’s like the game 2 truths and a lie, but reversed)
A few weeks ago I went to advising and wasted 30 minutes rewriting my plan. The only thing that changed this time around was that now I get to take 6 credits over a summer or winter term. Yipee for declaring late in the game! But, what I failed to do was ask my adviser if it was possible to declare a minor in Outdoor Adventure Programing, that’s a real thing, although I don’t think it’s possible unless I want to stay in college FOREVER. Which I certainly do not. College is really unexciting when you don’t really know what you want to do when you really grow up.. the only reason I want to minor in the Outdoor Program is because it’s almost exactly like what I will do for summer camp. I love summer camp, just not the other 3 seasons around summer and all the stuff I have to do during those extra seasons. Man, I’m tired of not really loving school.
Another good reason I am procrastinating is because I just did laundry. This is a good thing! I haven’t done laundry since spring break and I ran out of clothes. Bad thing, all my new clothes that I got over spring break need to be hang dried. Aint NOBODY got time for ‘dat. So I have clothes laying on every flat surface around my room and that is preventing me from going to bed, I have a really hard life, too many clothes so I can’t sleep in my nice bed. #FirstWorldProblems

This Tuesday I will be in a Kindergarten classroom reading to 6 six year olds for 30 minutes. I am excited but not ready. I went last Thursday for the first time and it was a blast. But this time, I’m not so sure, my book is kinda stupid, especially compared to the first book I read which they loved. — I’m sure they will find ways to entertain me if we have time left. Last time, we spent 5 minutes introducing ourselves. As we went around the circle, each student added something to my original question of “What is your name?” By the time the sixth kid got to say her name she spelled it, stated her first, middle, and last name, repeated all that information, said she liked to read, and showed me her socks. It was fantastic. They are so excited that an adult wants to spend time with them. I love it. I just hope that they all wear pants this week, last week one girl showed us all her new underpants by doing a summersault in her dress. Oh Kindergarten…
I’ll let you know how it goes.

-Morgan

p.s. 26 days until I’m home! and 37 until I go to camp!

A Whole Lot of Crazy

27 Feb

Hey guys. It’s been a crazy week and a half, and I’ve got one more crazy week and a half until I’m in the clear. And then it’s one week until spring break. Say what?! That’s also crazy!

I can’t remember another time in college so far when I’ve been so busy.

My weekly schedule*:

Sunday: Work 10-3
Monday: Class until 3, work from 5:30-10
Tuesday: Class until 2, work from 3:00-7:30, watch Dance Moms from 8-9
Wednesday: Class until 3, Skype from 3:30-5:30, dinner from 5:30-6, Authentic Bible study from 9-10:30
Thursday: Class until 2, work from 5:30-10
Friday: Class until 3, sometimes class from 4:45-7, sometimes work from 5:30-10
Saturday: Volunteer from 10-12, sometimes work from 3-8

*All other times not accounted for = homework, showering, or sleeping**
** mostly homework

I have to admit though that I’m pretty proud of how I’ve been handling myself. I’m getting my shit together and really using my time wisely. And I am immensely lucky that I can work on homework at work, I seriously have the best type of job that a college student could ask for.

The only other thing I’ve been doing is watching the Jodi Arias trial when I can. It’s kind of weird how I got interested, but the café on campus kept showing it on the TVs on HLN (aka the Nancy Grace channel) for the past month, and I saw parts of it here and there.  Then on my ice-day (not snow day) on Thursday, I watched the first day of cross-examination. I’d say this case is similar in salience (a word I just learned while working on my 15-20 page research paper) to the Casey Anthony case, but not quite as big. (Going along with the theme of things that are crazy, I think Jodi Arias is crazy.)

And I have an announcement, for those of you who haven’t seen already: I finally declared my majors! Hip hip hooray!

Bad Day Thursday

24 Jan

It’s only been 3 days since the semester has started and already I’m counting down the days until spring break. I really would just rather be at home not having to worry about school. But so far I think I’m going to really enjoy the classes I’m taking. They will be challenging and time consuming for sure. But luckily I don’t have any 8ams this semester. Yay!

Today was the worst of all the days thus far. It did start off pretty nice though.

I had some extra time this morning and was able to get a cinnamon crunch bagel. And me and Kens “purchased” Passion Pit/Matt and Kim concert tickets (thank goodness for student charge). They’ll be on campus in about a month! Super excited about that. It’s after this that everything started to go downhill. Mainly because I didn’t have much time to grab lunch. Before Micro bio, I did have a package of granola bar. After that I had another class from 430-630pm. Through out the whole class I was thinking about food. More specifically, mashed potatoes and gravy and chicken fingers. So after class, I’m cranky because I haven’t had substantial food since 9am. And when I was driving, I was driving, crankily too and almost hit 2 cars. Yikes. Then I realized that my gas tank was low. When I pulled up to the HyVee gas station, for some reason (I blame the hunger and low energy) I forgot which side my gas tank is on and I pull up on the wrong side. So I drive around again thinking I pulled up to the correct side only to realize that I AGAIN pulled up to the wrong side. At that point I was like, okay I’m just going to restart at a different gas station. 3rd time is the charm I guess. I decide to reward my efforts with Taco Bell. THEN later me and Kens decided to go to the Rec. We were pretty much on campus when my brain decides to remind me that I left my Student ID in my backpack, which was sitting on the floor in my room. Lovely. So I drop Kens off and drive back to get my ID. Also not to mention it’s freaking cold outside. Yep. Crappy day. Ready for sleep. Ready for the weekend. Rant over.

Anyway that’s the only “interesting” stories I have to share this week. Hope your Thursday has been better than mine! 🙂

Also, Google +? More like Google -. Haha! Hopefully it’ll work better this weekend!

70 Days and counting

20 Jan

A few weeks ago I went to Red Rocks Amphitheater and looked around. It is easily the coolest concert venue I have ever been to and I plan on attending a concert there sometime this year. Then me and some guys I work with rode longboards around Denver for a few hours and hit up a few skate parks we also went to my favorite store on earth REI.Red Rocks

Red RocksThis last week Ski Patrol opened some black diamond terrain only accessible by a 150 yard hike uphill in knee and waist deep snow. I jumped at the opportunity to ride somewhere that only a few dozen people have skied this winter and tried out my new camera. The hike was a killer and parts were so steep I had to jam my board into the snow for traction. I was sweating a lot by the time I finally reached the top but it was worth getting to ride the deepest snow on the mountain.

Thats Me^

This next week I am going to start learning to ride superpipe and after that my knee should be strong enough to hit some big jump lines.

I will probably never add to it or look at it again, if I do anything else on this list it will be because I woke up one morning and thought to myself  “I am going to do (insert awesome thing here) today”.

Next weekend I plan on going backcountry snowboarding off Loveland Pass. I plan on hiking from my car at the summit along the top of the peaks until I am about a half mile into the backcountry, where I will hopefully find fresh powder and not trigger a avalanche. Wish me Luck!

Mondays

10 Dec

This monday has been an okay one so far. I woke up at noon and got ready by 4pm. I found This Old House on my tv with cable! (which is like my favorite show ever besides Ask This Old House). And tonight starts the midnight snacks at the dining hall- I think tonight is chili cheese covered things.

I spent the weekend at the Broyer’s house in Castle Rock just to get away from campus before Finals aka week of dread. And It snowed like crazy on Saturday night. It was gorgeous. In Greeley it’s been so dry. It snowed for 3 days in a row in October which was super, but not a flake since so I’m a little disappointed. Also, Tori’s neighbors collaborated to make the best Christmas lights display that is synched to a radio station. It is literally the craziest thing I’ve ever seen, even more out-there than Kendyl’s neighbor and that one house on Liberty street with the house-sized sleigh in the front yard. (if you haven’t seen it yet, shame shame)

No one in Greeley is that crazy about Christmas lights, so I’m excited to go down to the plaza and see the lights! But- I must make it through finals week first. Bleh- There are too many pins on pinterest that describe my feelings about finals that I spend hours in the library laughing at pictures more than I do studying. I hate the library and have only been 5 times this semester, 4 of them being last week and this week “studying” for finals. Last week was horrible. I had 2 finals on Thursday that I was not prepared for. My Geography final required me to take 4 online quizzes over 8 chapters in the book which were due at 7am on Thursday and I started them at 11pm Wednesday. And our library closes at midnight (which is the stupidest thing ever, for real) so 4 of my friends and I went searching for a place that stayed open past midnight. The only place we could find was McDonalds. I was so looking forward to going to IHOP and smelling syrup but it was closed, boo. Mickey-D’s was not only the last resort for studying, but was THE place to be to fix the drunchies (drunk-munchies) after hitting up Whiskey River. We met a lot of great people. One freshman boy had lots of interest in our table of studying and was real chatty for a long time. He talked to us for about 10 minutes and right before he left he told me that I was the prettiest person at the table and wanted to know what my thoughts were on dating. That ended well. And the story has more detail but it’s better to tell in person. But my things did get done and I know I got an A on one final and a solid B on the other!

Good luck on your finals week, I hope freshmen don’t distract you too much and more studying gets done than snacking (:

See you soon!!

p.s. Derek please be safe with all the new passes opening, also you should make a snowman and post a picture of it and you standing next to it so we know you have all of your limbs over break..

Classy like Chrisman

28 Nov

I agree with Kendyl, Thanksgiving break was awesome and definitely too short. After eating way too much food for about 5 days straight, I’ve now resumed the standard position of Starving College Student.

One of my favorite parts about Thanksgiving break was that we put up the Christmas tree on Friday night and decorated it on Saturday. We never used to do it this early, but the rule was always that it had to be up before my birthday (December 14th), but last year since I wouldn’t be home from college until after the 14th, we did it at Thanksgiving, so the tradition continues. Another one of my favorite parts of the break was when our next-door neighbor Don (the mayor) called and said he had 6 tickets for the Missouri Comets (pro indoor soccer) game that night, and did we want them? We definitely wanted them! I guess I should mention that the other 4/5 of my family have been to 2 Comets games in the past year, also free tickets from the mayor. I am so happy I got to go this time! I asked if I could invite Nick since there were only 5 of us and so Nick went with us too.

The best part of the Comets game was that we got to sit in one of the Box Suites! There was free popcorn, pretzels, and pop and it was so splendid. I had never been in this arena in the Independence Events Center before, so when we were walking through a hallway to our suite, I asked “Where do all the peasants sit?” This was funny because for some reason “Peasant” was a word that Becky kept using to describe us (me and her) because we don’t have Instagram and have DumbPhones. (AKA no Internet). But anyway, I was seriously feeling like high-class royalty during the game.

Then I had to come back to school blahblah. I am trying not to “let the man get me down” by remembering that in 2 weeks from today I will be out of here! Just keep swimming, just keep swimming! (Dory voice) Also, 24 days until Germany! Where are you guys doing over Christmas break? I leave December 21st but I am free from the 11th until then! When are you going to SUOMI Kendyl??

Also, the drama with Chrisman right now is so horrible but in a strange way I’m gonna just say this: It’s probably the first day ever ever that I kind of wish I still went to school at that wretched place. Because I bet that was a really funny and interesting environment to be in today, and also I really enjoy intense awkward social situations. S/O to T-Laugh if you’re reading this, you should totally comment and tell me how the day was.

I think I am going to make cookies tonight. #YOLO

Lately.

27 Nov

Thanksgiving break was pretty great, but it was definitely too short. I spent Thanksgiving at my grandparents house and ate some really delicious food and what I like to call desserts of the world: apple pie, pumpkin pie, and blueberry cobbler (just kidding all those things are pretty American). Then on Friday we always have a chili dinner at one of my aunts or uncle’s house. We also had pulled pork sandwiches so I got my BBQ fix. Then Saturday we went up to my Grandma’s farm and had some more food.

One of the girls in my sorority from Jewell messaged me the other day and asked if I would be interested in walking in Kansas City Fashion Week for one of her designer friends. I was like why not? So, I told her sure. I don’t really know many details yet other than its March 3rd and I’m pretty sure I’m going to have to walk in heels, which makes me a wee bit nervous considering I don’t even own a pair of heels. (OK that’s a lie, I own one pair, but it’s like a 1-inch heel.

Lately I’ve been watching a lot of indie films on Netflix and some of them are actually pretty good. They have a sense of realness and awkwardness that some other films lack. Some of the ones I’ve liked so far are Life Happens (It has Krysten Ritter in it. Love her.), Like Crazy, and Take Me Home.

The townhome is gaining a dog on Thursday. Yesterday we went to the Columbia Humane Society to help Kellan pick out a dog because he feels the need to get one. Not going to lie it’s pretty cute and I’m kind of excited, but I do worry a little bit about how this is going to work out.

I’ve been doing pretty well with exercising and going to the Rec center while here at school, but I would like to start to eat healthier and learn to cook (to some extent). Maybe that will be one of my new year’s resolutions.

The semester is so close from being over. I can’t wait.

Keep it Classy.

P.S. If you’re looking for something new to listen to consider Lana Del Rey’s album paradise. (You may not like it, but I think its pretty great)

RIP to my favorite band and almost to me graduating ever.

14 Nov

This past weekend was Jack’s Mannequin’s final show(s) ever. I am very distraught by this fact but feeling extremely lucky that I got to go to their concert last year. Last week I was searching for “Jack’s Mannequin” on ebay to see if there was any good merchandise, and I came across something that I thought only existed in my dreams: a large square poster of their first CD cover (my favorite) called Everything in Transit, which just so happened to be AUTOGRAPHED! It was even better than in my dreams! I’d pretty much given up hope on ever finding something like that, because I figured that it probably didn’t even exist in the world, but somehow it did. The bidding started at $9.99, and I ended up winning with a bid for $35. Not even feeling guilty about it. Totally worth it, good thing I have a job now right? Anyway, I’ve spent a lot of time this weekend watching videos of the concert on youtube and feeling nostalgic.

There were about 30 minutes this week where I thought I was just going to quit college, fo rillz. Wanna know why? Because of this damned little thing called class registration. I started preparing for this weeks ago. I had every semester planned until graduation, with everything I needed to get my Advertising and PR major, and Global Studies and Spanish minors. Students with more credit hours started registering last week, and I decided to go online and see how many seats were still open in the two classes that I absolutely NEEDED to take next semester, because they are pre-requisites to pretty much every communication class ever. So I go to the course search, and what do I find? BOTH OF THEM WERE EFFING FULL. WHAT!!!??? I didn’t understand! WHAT upperclassmen were signing up for these classes!? Surely if they really needed them, they would have taken them much sooner than the second semester of their junior/senior year?! I frantically emailed both professors asking them what I should do, I was also grudgingly thinking about having to move my study abroad to next spring…

Then I went into the living room to pout. I recounted my story of endless woe to Caitlin and Kayla. Caitlin asked me if I was sure that I was looking at the courses for spring semester, not fall. So I went back, and sure enough, I was looking at the courses that were already full because they were happening THIS semester. Whoops… then I checked spring semester and only like 2 or 3 seats were taken in each. You know what I had to do then, right? I had to email those professors and be like, lol jk, false alarm. But I was so happy that I gained my life back, that I wasn’t even that embarrassed. In other news, due to a strange turn of events, I’m taking senior seminar in Spanish next semester, nbd. Also thinking about just going ahead and majoring in it too.

In other other news, QUIDDITCH CUP CHAMPION RIGHT HERE. Proud member of the Hulking Hippogriffs. Quidditch sign-ups were individual or in pairs, and on the day of the tournament, they assigned teams. Luckily, Caitlin and I got put on a team with two super-athlete Frisbee players, and a cross country runner who could be the Seeker. I did score a few goals though! 🙂

P.S. Question of the day: How the hell is Ms. Sparks’ nickname Libbi when her real name is Katherine??

Swag Might Pay the Bills

24 Oct

I had such a wonderful, relaxing, sleep-filled fall break. Legit. I was sad when it came to an end. It will always be thought upon fondly…

Monday was back to school, blahhhh school ew. I got a free t-shirt from the Career Planning & Development Office though. It says “Swag won’t pay the bills” which is apparently supposed to scare us into coming to the career planning & development office because we need to plan our lives once our swag runs out. However I do believe that swag has paid Justin Bieber’s bills pretty well so far. Hmm.

I had my first day at work on Monday. I worked at the rock climbing wall. I did not sign up to work at the rock climbing wall. But I got scheduled to do it (it added me 7 hours this week and 10 next week) so I was like yeah sounds good I’ll do the rock wall. Basically the guy said we can do whatever the hell we want when no one is there, which is about 95% of the time. Only about 4 kids came to climb in the whole 4 hours but they only climbed for like 5 minutes each. And then when I got back to school, I made the Potter Puppet Pals video, it was awesome. I’ll let you guys know when it goes online.

Yesterday my climate change professor randomly decided to tell us about her husband’s affair. And a Chinese boy in my Calculus class decided to sit in a chair in front of the door so our teacher couldn’t get in. That was a sufficiently awkward and delightful time.

Then I had my first day of work at the front desk which was also pretty easy and I got to text a lot. We thought that one child got kidnapped from the Tae-Kwon-Do class, but false alarm.

Today I had class and then volunteered at the animal shelter. It was nice, the puppies were eating their own shit today. Then I came back home to the apartment and got ready for day 2 of work at the rock climbing wall.  Only one kid climbed tonight. I climbed twice, I almost got to the top (about 5 feet away (it’s 28 feet tall)) but then I started feeling like jello so I decided I should let go. I felt pretty accomplished though considering I never climbed one of those things before!

And then I stopped at Dollar General because I needed to get Carrie a birthday card, and then I saw peanut butter M&M’s and realized that I needed those too.

So I just got home and Kayla and Tobi are playing “A Team” by Ed Sheeran in Kayla’s room on the guitar and piano and they’re singing. I love living with musical people!

Also… #throwback

Holy Sunsets

8 Oct

Seriously- the sunsets here, right now, could not get any more beautiful. If I were thinking I would grab my camera and share the beauty with all of the world wide web, but alas, I don’t take enough pictures and my camera is far away from me.

Speaking of pictures- I finally took pictures of my new place! And now I would show them to you but I can’t figure this out. Maybe I’ll attach them to the end of this blog….

I can’t believe it’s already October. Where has the semester gone. And I really should know a lot more information from my classes by now- but I don’t. That’s a problem. Especially since midterms are right around the corner….

This weekend was Homecoming and I did not participate. Tori and I watched the football game on tv and we were pulverized by Montana who is ranked only one seed above us (I think). But I did learn some news yesterday… we have an actual dance for Homecoming. I seriously had no idea that it’s the same as high school with the dance and game and parade and everything! Oh and I was reminded that we have a parade at 9:30 in the morning Saturday with the band playing right outside of my dorm, they are pretty good actually.

Navigators is keeping me pretty busy. Thursday I helped to kick off the most favorited activity ever: Swing Dancing! (I actually am not a fan of swing dancing, or dancing in general, but seems like every other person involved in Navs is in love with it and is really good at it). I got to be the DJ which was great because I only had to dance twice and always had an excuse to cut out of a song early. Overall, everyone had a good time and the turn out was great! In two weeks I’ll be going to the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park for an anual conference for the Navs teams from the surrounding areas. Three or four campuses from Colorado, and a couple from New Mexico and Wyoming and maybe one from Montana. This will be my second time in the mountains this semester and I really can’t wait to see all the aspen trees being all yellow.  I will take my camera then, so I can show y’all the greatness of the mountains.

– Almost forgot! A few friends and I have been going to the rock wall at the gym almost every day this past week. It is super fun and challenging every time we go. I have a couple of nice bruises on my knees and two gross scars on the backs of both hands from hanging on for dear life when I forget that someone is holding me on to the wall with a rope. So climbing is my new favorite thing and I’m hoping to go on Thanksgiving break at IBEX.

Hope these pictures work-

Sickness

27 Sep

Hey everyone!

So Friday we went to the girls soccer game. Besides missing out on the free shirts it was really exciting! Afterwards we went to Mizzou After Dark and we crafted it up and got some free Jimmy Johns, which was good because we were both pretty hungry after the game. Here’s my very first crayon canvas that I made there…

The line for that craft was HELLA long. But I’m happy with the way it turned out for the most part. I was expecting it to be worse. We also made ModgePodge coasters. Overall, it was a pretty good night.

Anyway, at the soccer game, I started to notice that I had a tickle in my throat. And all that day, my nose had been runny. The runny nose I didn’t think much of because I normally have allergies, but the tickle PLUS a runny nose…!! I was definitely catching something. So Saturday night we went to Wally World (where Kens had her encounter with “women problems”) to get some NyQuill and DayQuill (except I got the WalMart brand because I’m living on a college kid budget and still don’t have a job). The first few days of being sick, I for sure felt like complete crap. No joke. But I’m mostly better as of today, except for some stuffy nose issues. But suffice it to say, I definitely slept a lot this week, used a whole bunch of tissues, ate quite a bit of soup, watched a lot of the premier episodes of a lot of shows on my laptop (some of those shows being Breaking Amish, Dancing with the Stars, Parks and Rec, The Office, Glee, Go On, etc.. I might have a TV show addiction… Possibly), and procrastinated doing my homework/studying more than I usually do. I’m blaming it on the sickness.

Today me and Kens went to B-Dubs for Boneless Thursdays  It was worth it. Asian Zing is the way to go. I’m not just saying that because I’m Asian either.

Tomorrow we only have to be on campus for 2 hours because our Sociology class got canceled because we have a test Monday. #winning. Also Monday is the Florence and the Machine CONCERT!!! I’m super excited because I’m really ready to go home for a tiny break from school and also because IT IS GOING TO BE MY FIRST CONCERT EXPERIENCE!!! AHHHHH!! I’m super excited!! And since my class on Tuesday got canceled (also because of an exam) I won’t have to worry about coming back to CoMo in a hurry. But that definitely means I’m going to be studying all weekend. Yaaaaaaaay…..

I saw this video before I was about to start this post… I’m sure you guys will enjoy it. What’s not to enjoy? Elmo, good. Zac Efron, AWESOME!

What happened to his YOLO tattoo though?!

Alright I’ve got to finish my biology homework.
Peace out, broskis!

Megan

PS. If you guys haven’t checked out Mumford & Sons new album, you definitely should. It’s sooooo good!

Free Shirts and Shit.

20 Sep

Yesterday was Fire Factor, it’s basically a fire safety demo. They literally lit a make-shift dorm room on fire to show you how fast a fire can spread. Afterwards there were free t-shirts and Shakespeare’s Pizza if you filled out a survey. We skipped class for that (I justified it because I had just taken 2 tests back-to-back). That’s my YOLO this week. Livin’ big, I know. Once I heard it was Shakespeare’s Pizza, that sealed the deal for skipping class. Haha! Before the fire thing, we got another free t-shirt and pizza from the Arts and Science Fall Welcome. Then there was a booth in front of the Union that was handing out t-shirts for registering to vote. We had already registered, but we asked if we could have a t-shirt anyway. Hello t-shirt #3 for the day. Also since yesterday was “international talk like a pirate day” they were giving out pirate’s booty snacks and those chocolate coins. Delish.

Tomorrow there’s a girls soccer game. The first 500 people in get free t-shirts. You know where we’ll be tomorrow.

We just got back from Poetry in the Park. That was a cultural experience. And I’ve never felt more like a minority. But Kendyl was probably feeling more out of place than I was… I’m at least kind of, sort of dark skinned… ish….. LOL. I’m going to be honest, Kendyl and I originally went to the event because we had heard that there was going to be free B-Dubs. There was and it was delicious. But in the end I think we both enjoyed ourselves and had a a pretty good time even if it was freezing cold and we both had to pee badly towards the end. Not going to lie, Slam Poetry is pretty awesome and those people have really got powerful stuff to say. I could never do that in front of a crowd all by myself.

I’m really diggin’ MIZ with all the free shirts and shit. Legit.

Also in case you haven’t heard the news… ONE DIRECTION HAS A NEW SONG OUT!! WUT. I’ve probably listened to it at least a hundred+ times already. What’s kind of sad is that Kendyl knew about the song before I did! What is the world coming to?! But I loveeee it! Even if the lyrics make them seem like man-whores. It’s catchy, what can I say. 302 days until I see them LIVE at the Sprint Center!! That’s what’s up. ^_^
