Running on fumes

3 Feb

I’ve been back in Colorado for almost 5 weeks, and it feels like I never left. When all six of us roommates got back together that first Sunday night before school started and sat downstairs, we laughed for hours, and it felt like winter break was just one long weekend. Leaving home kind of sucked. I only got to see you guys once! I wish we were still able to go on night-time adventures together… but Kansas is kind of in my way…

The past few weeks of school have been killer. I am taking 17 hours too, Megan! It is a lot of work. I’m taking two lab classes (BIO and Oceanography), Teaching with Writing, History of Colorado (which blows because everything really important in American history happened or started in Independence or MO in general.. my MO pride really comes out a lil too much in this class), Geometry, and an online technology course worth one credit which requires the course work of a 3-credit class. Mondays and Wednesdays, my classes don’t start until noon and I’m done by 3:30 so that’s nice. Tuesday and Thursday I have class 8-12pm and on Tuesdays I have Bio lab from 1-3.. so that really sucks. Also on those days I volunteer at the Boys & Girl’s club until 7 and on Thursday I go straight back to campus for Navigators until 9. So my days are pretty packed. Fridays are like heaven. I have one class 2:30-3:20 and volunteering at club from 4 until dinner or close, depending on my plans. Oh don’t let me forget Women’s ministry at church on Monday nights, Bible Study on Tuesday nights, and babysitting on Wednesday nights. Saturdays are my only days off. I’m pretty optimistic about this semester so far; here’s to hoping that optimism stays for 13 more weeks.

Over break, which now seems like forever ago, I got exciting news! I was offered the job of On Location Camp Counselor at Eagle Lake camp in Colorado Springs!!! I am so so so very excited to spend my summer serving at a camp again, and even more excited that it’s in Colorado (and the surrounding area). My specific job will consist of traveling around Colorado or the northern Midwest area and doing camp at different churches each week. This is the stuff I want to be doing for the rest of my life, so being able to start that now is beyond a blessing. My whole summer is already planned out, and what a relief. I can’t imagine trying to deal with the stress of making summer plans while taking 17 credits. Good luck to you guys with finding internships and jobs!

Outdoor soccer starts the 18th of February and I cannot wait! I went to the gym Friday to play volleyball with my roommate and we ended up playing for almost 2 hours. Oh my gosh I am so sore. Muscles that I never thought I had are hurting me. I don’t like it. VB is hard and hurts your arms so much. My palms are bruised, and I don’t know how that happened. Bleh. I’m so ready to get back out on the soccer field.

Happy birthday week to you Kendyl!! All of the world will be celebrating with you!

Real Life Again

22 Jan

Well, here I am in my fourth day back on the Lane. It’s really hard to believe that break’s already over, and I’m in Springfield again. The past two years of college, I always spent around half of my break in Germany, so it never felt very long. This year, even though I went to Germany, I still had four weeks of break at home and I was expecting it to go pretty slow since I wasn’t working or anything. I guess I was having too much fun with you guys and my family for it to go by as quickly as it did.

I can’t say that I’m unhappy to be back in Springfield though. I packed all my stuff, most of which was never unpacked from London, and on Saturday my family and I drove down here in three separate cars. We arrived around 4pm and went to Lambert’s for dinner. That’s our tradition. Then we went back to the hotel. In the morning, we drove all three cars over to school and I moved into my new apartment in University Suites. And it’s pretty suite. Did I tell you I forgot my textbooks at home? Basic. We ate at Fazoli’s and made our annual Walmart run, then Becky left to go to Rolla and the rest of my family went back home. I hung out with Carson and we waited for Hanna to get here.

Sunday night I hung out with Hanna and another roommate, Morgan, and some of their sorority friends. Woke up Monday morning not feeling so hot, haha… took a shower which was the worst shower of my life because the water was coming out too hard and then Madi (who we went to London with) picked Hanna and me up for lunch. I felt better by then, and when we came home Hanna and I went to Carson’s for a little. I had Panera for dinner and Caitlin came over to watch the Bachelor. I spent the rest of the night taking buzzfeed quizzes and hanging up the rest of my wall decorations.

Yesterday I had two classes, Intro to Environmental Science which I’m guessing will be just like my Climate Change class I had with the same teacher in fall 2012, and Communication and Ethics, which is with the teacher I had for Presentational Speaking class freshman year. I am about 99% sure he teared up at one point. I think that class will be good though. I met with the Spanish professor who will be doing my independent study with me and we decided on meeting days/times. I also talked to my manager at the family center and I emailed him my hours of availability so hopefully the ball gets rolling on that pretty soon. I skyped Moritz and then went to dinner with Hanna and Morgan, and we came back and sat in the kitchen and talked for about five hours and ate some chocolate cake and then went to bed.

This morning I woke up early at about 7:15 and took a shower, which I have now (mostly) fixed… for the first time, I didn’t get water all over the floor! I picked up my textbooks I ordered from the bookstore and ate breakfast in the commons (it’s omelette day). Then I went to my first class, Strategic Writing for Advertising and Public Relations. It’s my first 400-level Communication class, and it’s with my adviser/the head of the communication department, so I think it will be really tough but the teacher is so nice and I know she is going to teach me a lot. It’s my smallest class too, and a lot of us already know each other. One interesting thing about it, though, is that we have to dress “professional” every Wednesday and that’s actually part of our grade.

Then I had Web Communication with my Media Writing teacher from last year and we’re going to make our own website, so I think that will be pretty fun. I think I might do mine about London. He says we are required to buy our own domain and web server (since he only made us get one textbook. ha)

After class, I drove to Clinton, MO, which is about halfway between Independence and Springfield, to meet my mom so she could give me the rest of my textbooks (oooops). We had lunch at Applebee’s and I told her about my classes so far and she gave me my books plus some more stuff I requested like nail polish and hot chocolate. So I just got back about an hour ago.

Well, school’s off to a good start but I can definitely tell it’s going to be a busy and challenging semester. I proved I could handle it last spring, but let’s just hope that London didn’t make me too lazy and forget my good habits.

Year In Review

16 May

As of yesterday, my semester/year has finally ended, and to be honest it’s kind of bittersweet. Coming to Mizzou was never really a plan that I had planned on following through with. Though it’s been an adventure adjusting to this new environment, I feel like I made the right choice, and I hope that I’ll be able finish my education here (fingers crossed for nursing school!). That isn’t to say that I regret my year at Jewell, because I don’t. But I guess if there’s one thing I regret it’s not making the decision to come to Mizzou first, if that makes sense… Haha.

This Spring semester has most definitely, hands down, been the most challenging/stressful semester I have ever gone through. This week especially. I hate finals. It probably could almost classify as a miracle that I’ve even made it out alive. But still, for the most part I’ve enjoyed every class that I was in.

Here are some highlights/lessons learned/favorite memories of my year at Mizzou (in no particular order or importance).

  • Getting my first speeding ticket, also getting my first parking ticket (the latter was yesterday, when I almost missed my last final.)
  • Seeing Imagine Dragons preform… FOR FREE. And seeing Passion Pit and Matt & Kim for a small fee.
  • Being sick for 6 weeks. Not cool man. I’m better now though.
  • Microbiology 2800. I don’t care who you are/what your major is, you need to take this class to know the hilarity/awesomeness that is Dr. Furrer. Besides that, subject matter/teaching wise, it’s probably the best class I have ever taken. Ever.
  • Getting 2.5 snow days.
  • I can procrastinate like no body’s business. Thank you Netflix, FB, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest and Imgur. That being said, apparently my body can’t handle stress that is usually a result of procrastination very well (see point #3).
  • The closest I got to an all-nighter was sleeping only for 2 hours…. On many, many, many nights.
  • Ellis library is freaking awesome. Although scary as well (I’m sure librarian Kendyl could tell you more so than I can)
  • Getting a lot of free things, including shirts and lots of food.
  • Attractive male in my history class.  He was real attractive.
  • I miss music/violin more than I thought I would, probably one downside to coming to MU.
  • I’ve been able to appreciate my family and KC a lot more now that I’m 123 miles/1.5 hours away.
  • The basement of the Student Union has very comfy couches that are GREAT for naps.
  • I probably spent too much in the bookstore on clothing/apparel and books. Gosh I really hate buying books.
  • Never take a “5 minute nap” during a study break. It never ends up being 5 minutes, no matter how hard you try to make it last only 5 minutes.

I can’t believe that I’ve just finished my 2nd year of college. CRAZY!! However I’m getting super excited for summer! Even though I’m going to be so majorly busy, wahhhh!!

Peace out for now!
Megan

PS. Sorry Cathy for kind of copying the premise of your post!!

PPS. I just got a little depressed, guys. I googled Kansas City Explorers to find out their schedule this summer. I found out that they’re moving to Irving TX because there wasn’t enough corporate support in KC to keep there here. 😦

El fin! Hasta enero, Springfield. Hasta pronto, amigos :-)

15 May

I am free! 🙂

This is a little bittersweet though. It’s been the best semester of college by far, potentially the best of my life ever. It was much needed after the worst semester of college and my life ever last semester. But this one has been awesome. I am a little sad it’s over and that I won’t see a lot of my friends and professors or be on Drury’s campus until January. But then I remember I’m going to LONDON in 3 months so I stop being sad pretty quick.

I actually haven’t been that stressed out this week. I’ve been stressed all semester, in a good way though. It kept me busy and kept me going all the time, but I just feel so satisfied when I check things off my list of things to do, so I’ve been managing my time really well. Considering how much I’ve been working, I’ve had to. So I never got panicked-stressed out.

Friday night we had our final Summit project presentations. Here’s me and my roommates outside our house wearing our Volunteer shirts we got from the shelter.

Today I had my final presentation of my research project. I still can’t believe that dang project that wouldn’t go away is… gone. If anyone’s interested in learning about Media Framing of the Sandy Hook Shooting and wants to read a 17-page paper about it, hit me up. My mom told me she thought it would be really boring but it kept her attention. So there’s a testimonial, if you’re skeptical.

I got my final grades for my two Spanish classes where I have an awesome teacher. 97.75% in Spanish 302 and 97.6% in Senior Seminar! I got a 98% on both of my final papers. The other day I was talking to my professor and she said I’ve really improved a lot and I am probably one of the ones who have improved the most.

Here’s a picture of me and my class at her house after the Iniciación ceremony for the Sigma Delta Pi honor society! Those little kids are another professor’s kids.

enyay

I’m really going to miss my Spanish class!

I don’t know what to do with myself now. Probably eat a lot of food, right? I’ve been having a lot of Chipotle and pizza lately.

Or maybe I should work on cleaning this:

room51513.

… Nah. I’m going to enjoy my freedom for now.

Here’s a list of some of the best things about this semester (no particular order):

  • Going to Atlanta to watch the basketball team win the national championship
  • Getting the outstanding sophomore in the communication department award
  • Eating dinner at my Spanish professor’s house with my class
  • Winning extra credit for our research poster
  • A cat named Georgie at the animal shelter
  • IPHONE
  • Getting prepared to go to London
  • Making new friends with people in my classes
  • Being addicted to the Jodi Arias trial (Guilty- first degree premeditated murder)
  • Going to St. Louis for a weekend with Caitlin
  • Not having any classes I hate
  • Not having calculus which is the ultimate class I hate

I’ll be home on Friday night, see you guys for Dirty Dancing on Saturday night! I’ll make some snakes. Oops I meant to say snacks, but it’s funny that I said snakes instead so I decided not to change it.

And t-minus six days until the Of Monsters and Men concert! That kind of snuck up on us, didn’t it? Hooray!

Cathy

P.S. Let’s come watch Andy Roddick play on the Springfield Lasers tennis team sometime this summer! I don’t really know anything about him but I know you guys do.

P.P.S. I’m still in shock it’s summer now. IT’S SUMMER RIGHT NOW. It feels like it was just last summer, right? I’m so excited for pie-worthy stories and sitting on the big rock at Bass Pro and being scared of creepy people and raccoons. Can we go camping on your property again, Kendyl? I wonder if Nick will be allowed this year.

P.P.P.S. How is it that we graduated from Chrisman 2 years ago? How is it that we just finished our SOPHOMORE YEAR OF COLLEGE?

2 May

Hello everyone. To those of us who are still in school… ONE MORE WEEK! We can do it… most likely.

Nothing going on. Over the weekend I went home because Becky had prom, and Caitlin came too. I can’t even count the number of THIS dead animal that we saw as roadkill… wtf? I have NEVER seen those before while journeying from Springfield to Independence and back.

The weekend was fun. Friday night we drove around and I showed Caitlin places of interest, Saturday we hung out at home and I went to the dentist (nothing wrong with my teeth). Then Becky came home from getting her hair done, and all her asshole douchebag shithead pieces of shit “friends” decided they were going to take pictures and go to the restaurant 45 minutes early without her, and she wasn’t ready yet, also they decided not to pick her up. I wanted to go to that restaurant and give those little bitches a piece of my mind… like seriously? Do they not have any concern for anyone but themselves? Well anyway, Becky looked awesome and my mom took her to the restaurant and my mom was pretty pissed at those kids too.

Then Carrie had her friend Maureen spend the night, and around 8:00 the 4 of us decided to walk to Yogurtini because me and Caitlin are suckers for fro-yo in Springfield and Caitlin was impressed with Yogurtini. Then my mom picked us up, and dropped Carrie and Maureen off at home, and took Caitlin and I to the movies with her and the 3 of us saw The Lucky One with Zac Efron. We love him.

Went home, went to bed, went to church, and watched High School Musical 3 the next day. We had to leave around 2:30 because Caitlin had a sorority meeting at 6 back at school.

Good news – I got a 97/100 on my mustache video and I finished that class with an A!

So, you may be asking yourself, what does the next week bring for me? So, I would answer you, a shit ton of stuff. Oral Spanish interview in the morning, working in the Alumni office later on to help with pre-graduation stuff, and Potter’s House with the Authentic Ministries crew tonight. A barbecue at the Drury Ambassador advisor’s house on Thursday, and another barbecue with Authentic on Sunday. A computer science program due Friday that I haven’t started yet, and two labs that were started in March but were never finished (with good reason). Cleaning the bathroom Saturday. Mounting my photographs on boards (and first buying said boards). FINALS (one on Tuesday, + a paper being due, and one on Wednesday). I’m going home WEDNESDAY! Packing. Gotta do that Monday, I suppose. My mom is coming around 3 on Wednesday and I have to check out by 4:30. So this should be fun.

I’m just really excited! I survived the first year……… almost.

Cathy
P.S.The reason I am posting this at 12:30am is because I think tomorrow I will be too busy to post during real hours.
P.P.S. I couldn’t think of a title then I went to facebook and someone posted brotip #1865 as their status and I found it extremely appropriate.

There’s something on the floor…

4 Apr

I feel like not much has happened, yet I don’t know where the whole week went since last Wednesday.

Thursday I had to do a “funny” project for video class with a partner… first, I don’t know anyone in my class of 10 people. Second, this project is not for a grade so why would I want to do it?
Anyway, a girl named Lindsey who is on the soccer team, and in the sorority with a certain reputation, asked me if I wanted to be her partner so I was. She is really nice. We went to her apartment and pretended we had a club where we obsessively painted our nails and it turned out better than we were expecting.

Usually on the weekends I hang out with Caitlin, but this weekend she went to Truman State to visit her two best friends, so I was like well now what? Anyway, I ended up laying outside on a blanket in the sun with Kayla for 2 hours (after properly applying sunscreen, of course). Then we hung out in her room for a while, played tennis outside, and then decided to WALK to downtown Springfield around 9:00pm. The walk seems much longer than the drive, but we always have lots to talk about so it was fun. We went to Starbucks in the Bistro Market, and then proceeded to the newly renovated Park Central Square where we witnessed some 15 year olds smoking cigarettes and acting like, well, 15 year olds. I was grateful to be wearing a sweatshirt that proclaimed DRURY across the front, so everyone would know we were at LEAST college age, in case there was any doubt.

Also, there was a fight somewhere I think and so then the whole slew of police cars, a firetruck, and a ambulance came blaring by. Then we saw a guy running around on the roofs of buildings. And some people who were in a sword-fighting club just doing their thing at the square. We went to Jordan Valley Park, and eventually returned back to school around midnight.

Saturday I just acted like a bum and finished my research paper that was due Monday. Sunday I didn’t do much either. I laid out with Kayla again, and skyped, so that was important!

Monday was not noteworthy, other than getting froyo at a place downtown that is not very good… it’s not a franchise, maybe that’s why, but their cheesecake bites taste more like cornbread…

Yesterday sucked big big balls. I wanted to skip photography because I’ve finished the next project, but noooo then he sent an email and was like “yo guyz I need u to B here Tuesday bcuz im liek gonna go over the final assignment.” Well DAMN. I got my butt out of bed at 7:30, went to class at 8, stayed for 15 min as he explained the assignment, and went back to bed at 8:30. POINTLESS. Got up at 10:30, cause we had a meeting about picking our apartment for next year at 11. We were 3rd to choose and got the 2nd floor, YES! That lasted until 11:30, and then I had class starting at 11:30 until 1:30. Then class from 1:30 to 3. Then an interview for Drury Ambassadors at 3:30, and then a meeting for this honor society at 4:15. Yes, yesterday really sucked big balls. It’s like everyone was just like “oh hay how can we make Cathy have the most busiest day everrrrr” and then they planned accordingly. Aaand that’s my soapbox.

In other news, my parents have officially told me Moritz can come on vacation with our family this year 🙂

In other other news, I was woken up at 1:00 am by some girls in my hallway being very loud and exclaiming. I went to the door, opened it to ask them to be quiet and they said “Someone shit on the floor!” But they were quiet after that.
